AMD 4400X2 or wait for Conroe 6700

Hi guys

The upgrade bug has been bugging me for a while.

I currently have a Intel p4 3.06 machine, with a 6800Gt and 1gb Ram.

Should i upgrade to a X2 4400 or wait for the new conroe chips. Thinking about the 6700 model.

Opinions please.

I'd hold off for a bit, the new AMD socket AM2 promises some very nice low power dual core chips and Conroe could be sweet too.

AM2 isn't bringing new architecture so you'll get similar performance to 939 chips. Personally I'm waiting for Conroe, and unless you need the power now I'd reccommend you do the same.

I think AM2 will see a nice boost in performance with DDR-2 800 and the fixed memory controller, the THG review isn't really all that much to go on. The low power dual cores could be something special too.

Conroe also looks nice so we'll be seeing some good stuff soon.

That's the problem, there is *never* a right to upgrade a computer. Chances are, a couple months down the line and something faster/better has come out or is in the making. Wait 6+ months for conroe...something better announced...wait another 6months...repeat. I don't have that much patience, so I would just buy now.

I think i'll wait for conroe, on paper at least from what i have read it seems better than AMD's new release. Tom Hardware didnt think it was a big improvement over the current chips.

But we'll see. I've been waiting for soooooo long now..... But i guess waiting another 6 months should be ok. I mean the only game that i have issues with at the moment is FEAR!!!!.

Hopefully new range of GFX will be available then too. Heres hoping

What he said, i kept putting off upgrading, finally taken the plunge with a 3700+ after deciding my 2600+XP was past it's use by date now....
