AMD 4800 (939) to Intel Q6600

I'm about to upgrade from an AMD 4800 X 2 (Running at 2.76 GHz) to an Intel Q6600 once the G0 revison is available.

I have decided on an ASUS P5K3 Deluxe Motherboard.

Can anyone that has made a similar move let me know how much of a performance boost they noticed?

Would my existing XP120 Heatsink fit this processor and MB with all those cooling pipes?

Depends on what you do, the 4800+ is quite a beefy processor to start with, and overclocked its pretty fast.

For gaming you probably won't notice a huge difference, but if you do encoding and heavy graphics applications like photoshop or video editing then it will be much faster.

The XP120 should fit the P5KE as there is plenty of room around the cpu. Make sure you have the 775 socket fitting kit for the XP120 tho.

What I would worry about is whether the XP120 will be capable of cooling the Q6600. I've got a similar blow down heatsink the Zalman CNPS8700-LED and an able to hit 3.2Ghz on the Q6600 with temps in the high 70's. At 3.0Ghz the temps are 10 degrees lower so you should be able to at least hit that.

I went from a X2 3800+ to one and I noticed a massive difference. I went for the P5k Deluxe as I saw no point in DDR3 at the moment. I thought I'd try the odd game and they fly through, okay on a X800Xl at the moment (2900XT is on its way) but its a huge difference. Vista x64 is so fast and anything I throw at it is minced.

The P5k Deluxe makes sense given the current premium price of DDR3. I was going to start of with just 2GB and then purchase more once production ramps up. I may opt for the P5K for now as I could always buy another MB and DDR3 down the line with the money saved going for DDR2.
