AMD 4K Random Black screen

Hey Guys,

I have a problem with my setup which is really annoying me. I recently connected my pc to my TV to run 4k games. I have a club 3d adapter DP to HDMI 2.0 and its seems to work fine except I randomly get a black screen for a few seconds. I'm running MSI Gaming R290 in crossfire. I also have a 4k samsung monitor at my desk that does the same thing when hooked up directly from DP to DP.

I've searched on google and can't find any solution. People are on about lowering clocks ect but i'm just running my cards at stock. I have updated to the latest crimson drivers from 04-04-2016.

I disabled UPLS too but still happens.

Any ideas on how to fix this ?

Thanks,

Kev

I'm getting the same issue on 16.3.1. I had put it down to the new adapter (only managed to get hold of it yesterday). In a sense i'm glad it's not that as there are no alternatives, but either way the end result is i still can't use these cards the way i want to :(

This is with 2x 290, but i have another PC with a 295x-2 on a DP monitor that is fine.

Single 290, got a freesync monitor connected via DP and a regular monitor with DVI. The DVI monitor is getting this black out issue, main monitor is fine though.

It seems to be quite an issue as there are multiple post going back the last year or so with people having the same problem. I have tried a few more suggestions such as using afterburner to lower the clocks slightly and use a constant voltage but to no avail. I swapped my cards around also but no difference. I'm going to do a full format and re-install tonight of my machine (been needing to do this for a while anyway) to see if that might help. Will let you know if I get any further.

I hadn't really tried troubleshooting in earnest as I just assumed the problem was the adapter. I'll have a play around with it later and if I get anywhere I'll post it here.

I recently RMA'd a 390X for the same black screen issue on DP. All other outputs were fine.

Tried all the suggested fixes, including reducing clocks, reducing voltage etc, you name it. GPU confirmed faulty by OCUK when I returned for RMA, currently awaiting replacement.

Seems a rather common fault that Hawaii GPU's have (290, 290X, 390, 390X)

Seems pretty odd that both of my cards have the exact same issue. I really hope is isn't the cards themselves as I just spent an awful lot on wireless devices and cabling.

Are you using a decent quality high speed HDMI cable in conjunction with the DP adapter? Could it be a bandwidth issue with the HDMI cable?

aye I would go with this. I have a similar problem with my 290x, at 1440 it's fine but at 4k i get occasional black screens but it seems cable related as I get the black screens when i start moving the cable around. probably just the cable going bad from being kept at awkward angles for to long, was just a cheap looking one that came with the samsung monitor, been meaning to get a new one and try it out.

what brand makes fairly good DP Cables at reasonable prices?

Make sure you get a certified DP cable. It needs to be short length for 4K @ 60hz as well.

I had issues with a supposed 4k capable cable even at 1080p. Swapped cables to a decent variety and it's all good now, happily running 4K @ 60hz with no black screens so far.

Well it took an hour and half of going through 900 gig but I finally done it ! Saved whatever looked important from my storage drive. Found the first programs I ever wrote from 6 years ago, hangs head in shame :) Steam folder was 450 gig but I have no idea what the hell the other 400 gig was. Oh well it's gone now !

Away to re-install Win 10 now and see if it helps at all. Will let you guys know if it fixes the issue.

Out of interest what do you guys use for imaging your windows drive ? I used to use Achronis boot usb a few years ago but i've lost it. Would like a backup of windows with all drivers ect install after the new build.

I bought a Accell DP 1.2 certified cable, well two infact, a 1M and 2M version. Both produced random black screens when running 1440P 144hz on my 390X.

Plugged the same monitor into my Asus 980M skylake laptop, no black screens at all.

Hopefully my RMA replacement doesn't have this annoying issue.

I having similar issue

when its been idle for too long and turns off the monitor
It cant recover from it, I get to see the mouse pointer and can move but rest of the screen is black

the system hasn't crashed, cos I can still do shut down with the hard power button

I don't think its the cable, cos why would I be able to see my mouse pointer and nothing else.

Forgot to give update on this but just noticed it in my history. I done the full format and installed windows 10 again, drivers ect and the problem still persists however, I have found that it comes on randomly and the frequency is also random. Sometimes I can play a game for an hour and it doesn't happen and other times it will happen every few minutes.

Anyways I noticed that if I go into radeon display setttings and turn on and off gpu scaling a few times it seems to fix the problem at least for another hour or so. I have no idea why this works, I just kinda figured the screens resetting and going black and this option does the same so maybe it's syncing it properly or somthing.

Anyway still pretty dammed annoying when it happens but this seems to be enough to fix it for me until new cards come out. Anyone else with the problem give it a go, you never know.

Fixed mine with a different HDMI cable. What threw me was that the same HDMI cable was absolutely fine at 4k60 directly from the HDMI port of a 980TI.
