AMD 4x4.

Are the cpu's used in the 4x4 mobos going to be specific 4x4 cpu's or just 2x the current am2 x2's?

dont quote me but afair the amd chip will be a new 4 core design as opposed to intels 2 dual cores bolted together (initially) in the same way as they whacked two cores onto some wafer for the first dual core cpus
but this may have changed i recall reading something along those lines

As far as I'm aware 4x4 will only work with FX chips.

Regardless, you can just buy a dual socket Opteron setup now for the same effect and a fraction of the price I would have thought.

Not too sure on that.
ECC memory is needed for most dual opteron setups afaik. And most of them use v.noisey mobo fans.

Would be interesting to do though, a quad cpu setup. Shame it'll cost a fortune.

And Kentsfield / AMDs 4x4 will also cost a fortune :p

Hmm interesting I head the new AMD chips were due summer 07 I did think thats a bit too far off, AMD musta had something in the pipe since the 1st Duo2 benchies;)

Looks like this fall is gonna be interesting and a wallet aching time to upgrade also.

No, you are thinking of K8L which is a new native quad core architecture due sometime around 2Q 07.

I believe AMD have said that the chips will be called FX chips but they will be different from the current FX chips and we will no doubt see much cheaper versions.

You will not be able to use normal X2 chips in there as the chips for 4x4 need another hyperstransport link to communicate as 4x4 will not use FSB like traditional dual socket seyups (obviously until Opteron was released).
It should be a fair bit cheaper all in than the dual Opteron's, the motherboards will be more geared to the enthusiasts (overclocking options, PCIx etc.) and it will support non-ECC ram.

4x4 is very interesting, though not for the market AMD are aiming it at. Gamers will se no benefit really, it is the folders and power users that are going to want these. Especially asyou will be able to drop in 2 quad core K8L's if AMD ever make ones that support it. That is some serious power!!

not all dual boards are full of noisy fans. they are on the other hand full of expense and not designed with tweaking / overclocking in mind.
saying that check the tyan thunder n6650w if you want a board with everything :)
