Just have a play at the moment, currently working on volts and multiplier only - no FSB!

ccpuz.php

I'll keep adding images as I improve.

Why no FSB out of interest?

I just wanted to see what the max multi was, seems to be x17 (which is very high), running 1.47v.

Extra volts wont allow 18x, I even tried a suicide 1.62v run but wouldn't boot.

This system is on AIR though.

Last night I tried a few quick attempts with a raised divider and bumping the FSB, the system wouldn't hit windows though.

I'd be surprised if 3.4 was the limit especially as it's rock solid prime stable at that speed.

Tonight I'll have a play with a lower multi and high fsb, also juggling volts to find a sweet spot.

To be honest with a nice fsb jump from 400 - 500MHz stable at 3.5GHz I'd be happy! :)

Oddly, my £35 ASRock mobo allowed HT dividers so you could run HT on the CPU faster or slower, in fact on my old Opty I ran 1250Mhz HT, however the very expensive 'overclockers' MSI 790FX board doesn't seem to have the option in the bios!

3.46GHz, still under 1.5v this time with some FSB.

I'll see how far the FSB will go on this multi, when it struggles I'll drop the multi and then see how far the ram goes. ;)

Well my overclocking was thwarted last night because my Windows key decided it wasn't valid... very confused as to why?! Got an old retail box using a new sp2 disc might be the problem so I'm getting an old sp1 or original release from work for a re-run tonight. :)

I ran Everest Ultimate at my rig hammers everything (top Xeon and top Quad on the list) on memory performance, not really a big user of Everest but I assume that's pretty good! :D

Well the upgrade was simple for me as I was languishing on a single core opteron s939!

The dual core system is streaks ahead, literally, I can install several apps/drivers/games at once whilst still working and browsing on other items - 'true' multi-tasking indeed.

Performance wise Everest tells me my memory is running faster than anything out there, which I find hard to believe - I'll post up the results later (graphs).

There are TWO main issues I have with the MSI board so far, one is the fact I have no control (in the bios) of HyperTransport or PCI-E speeds. I need to be able to divide the HT speed (1GHz to 800Mhz for example) to allow for a higher overclock, the PCI-E on the other hand needs bumping from 100 to 112-120MHz.

These options could easily follow in a bios release, this board is brand new and running on v1.0 bios so plenty of time to mature.

I completely forgot about AMD OverDrive! That will allow me to modify HT speeds indepentantly of everything else. :)

Also, found a modified bios on the msi forums that will allow the same through the bios - tested working.

If I can keep HT down to 1GHz I think I'll open up the top end potential of this cpu by as much as 100-200Mhz.

Runs on air.

It sits on a window ledge (shielded by a blind so hte sun doesn't hit it), the window is very slightly ajar.

120mm at the front, 1 at the rear. Large silent 550w XClio PSU draws a good amount of air out also.

Case temps are ~20'c and the northbridge reports similar figures with the cpu just ~25'C at idle even running 1.5v at 3.46GHz! Very cool, literally.

Single core Opteron 144 @ 2.8GHz, socket 939 on ASRock DualSata2 board.

The Opty had 2MB cache but simply can't match the dual core for response in windows!

The 5000BE will last quite some time at these clocks, the cache drop from 1MB to 512k is only about 100-200MHz difference in real world terms... in other words you can't tell.

A rock stable 3.5GHz with a high FSB is plenty of power, that said I'll be pushing for 3.6 on air just to see if I can. :D

With this mobo I have plenty of time to wait for Phenom to mature, but even then I only browse, game and do a little office work so dual Athlon is plenty of poke of me.

Well this CPU either has a 3.5GHz wall or it doesn't like the inflated HT speeds (hopefully the later).

I've found a modden bios that allows me to modify the HT divider so I will try that tomorrow.

The HT limit seems to be just shy of 1.2/2.4GHz at this kind of clock range (3.4-3.5GHz). This confirms what Tanner has said about 222HTT (FSB)!

To be honest with just multiplier alone 1.4v is stable at 3.4GHz!

However I hit a wall thereafter so the multi is out of the question, voltage above 17x doesn't matter for me.

With stock 1.3v my chip is stable on purely multipliers up to 3.2GHz.

With the introduction of FSB/HTT I can drop the mutli and retain 1.45v up to 3.47GHz but then both the HT link and multi become a problem - I can't go higher on the multi and the FSB is pushing the HT speed to close to 1.2GHz to be stable.

I found a BIOS that opens up a HT divider so I can drop the multiplier down from 1:1 to 800Mhz or even 600 if need be. I believe this will give me a lift past 3.5GHz. :)

Right the bios is flashed and I've set the divider to 800Mhz.

So far so good, I'm hitting 250HTT/FSB, will keep pushing, I've even dropped the volts one notch to 1.464. Notice the bus (HyperTransport) is now **** on at 1GHz instead of crashing out at 1.2GHz+. :)

ccpuz.php

I'll push for 300! :D

Damn it seems as though my limit is (3490MHz) 3.5GHz at 1.5v.

I've tried 1.54v - 1.58v - 1.6+ and they all reboot on windows boot. :(

I'll try the multi again and raising the HTT along with NB chipset volts.

Instead of try and make 3.5GHz stable I've opted to tweak 3.4GHz stable and fast.

The 100MHz isn't worth the push if I can fettle the ram at a slightly lower voltage and fsb, same goes for the chip which I've got stable at s notch lower volts (idles at ~30'c). :)

Load after an hour of CoD4 is just 44'c which is mad!

Idle of around ~30'c.

System/northbridge temp ~22'c.
