AMD 5200+ overheating problem

Hi there everyone,

I've had my PC for around a year and a half now...

Here's my Spec:

Asus M2N-E SLI motherboard
4870 1gb
750W PSU
4GB Corsair ddr2 800MHz ram
250GB HDD
AMD 5200+ (2.7 Ghz)

And i have recently purchased the coolermaster 335 case and reapplied the thermal paste to the CPU.

Ever since i've had the pc i've had serious CPU overheating problems, however what is very strange is that it can overheat when running programs like Firefox and literally the second i close firefox or any game i'm playing the CPU temperature can go from 80C+ back down to 20 degrees... I can't successfully get through 3dmark06 because during the CPU test my pc just shuts down... I don't know whether the sensors on the motherboard are faulty but surely it cant be a cooling issue if the temperatures drop THAT quickly?

EDIT: I have ordered a new heatsink but i'm not even sure that's going to have any effect, the one i have ordered is:

Try updating the BIOS - that sometimes corrects dodgy motherboard readings.

If you are having heat issues due to a badly fitting retail heatsink the Arctic Cooling Freezer should resolve them - but as you say your temps shouldn't just jump from 80 to 20 degrees so it seems more like a sensor reading error.

What monitoring software are you using and have you tried reading the temps in your BIOS?

Everest and HWmonitor are worth trying out.

Thanks for the reply Plec!

I'm currently using Coretemp and speed fan to mointor my temps...

I've checked the temperatures in the bios after it has shut down due to overheating and yeah they read very similar to what coretemp says.
I want to try updating my bios but i'm scared :p

Don't be - as long as you read the manual it's not that hard.

I'm not familiar with your mobo - but i'll take a look later. Hopefully you should be able to update it from a usb pen. (Don't use window based utilities.)

If you can this is the one of the safest and easiest options - as i say i'll search out your manual later if i have time.

sounds a lot like a bad mount or bad thermal paste to me.
it could also be a very very warped IHS/heatsink or very poor IHS-core contact (i used to have a 4800+ s939, ran 80/70+c loaded dropping to 30 unloaded on water. lapping took it to 65/55 loaded. decapping 40/40 loaded....

good luck with new sink

Thanks Amonlym, Plec i took your advice and flashed the bios... it was actually very easy :D now the temps are much more stable... no more dropping 50 degrees in like 1 second! I am however still overheating but i feel the readings are much more reliable and i will see how the new heatsink fares.

Thanks everyone! I'll let you know how the new heatsink affects the temps :)

There's the manual, I'll take a look... If i can't find out how i'll report back :D

EDIT: Just taken a look.... says i need a floppy disk.. As you mentioned earlier would a USB drive be ok?

Just had a quick glance at your manual and you have little to fear as you have the ASUS Crashfree BIOS 3 utility so if you get a corrupt flash you can repair it using a USB stick or the supplied mother board CD - plus, you can use a USB pen to flash.

I would use the Asus EZ Flash 2 utility to flash the BIOS using the USB pen method - the instructions are on page 7 of the manual link. It’s one of the safest ways to flash and very easy. Just make sure you have a single partition USB stick under 8 gig and that it uses fat 32.

I was going to post up the page but imageshack is borked at the moment. It’s on page 7 sub section: 4.1.5

It could still be a poorly fitting heatsink but if it’s not a BIOS flash can resolve these things.

Plec, make one more post and your post count is 1337 :P

p.s. good luck azure ;)

Hehe, I am many things but 1337 is not one of them, unfortunately.

D'oh!

Must have posted at exactly the same time.

Glad it worked out for you - if you're still overheating then it does sound like you could use that Arctic Cooling Freezer.

My 1337 was short lived ;)
