Hi guys,
I currently have an AMD 64 3000+, and i am looking to upgrade.
I want to stay AMD.

Budget, around about £150.

Any suggestions?

Kind regards,

Anthony

What are uses of the PC? How much RAM do you have and what graphics card? What is the motherboard?

Assuming you have a socket 939 board you could get an X2 4400+ or something like that but depending on your current overclock in games it wouldn't be very effective (performance wise).

You could get an Asrock 775Dual-VSTA and an E6300, then use current RAM and graphics card but you say you want to stay with AMD. Unfortunately those options don't exist on AM2 so you'd be stuck with upgrading the processor for your current board or buying new RAM.

I agree with what tetra said above.

I guess tho if you really did want AM2 you could get the asrock 939 dual board and go with the AM2 CPU upgrade card, but i think you still have to use the DDR2 ram with it.

Hey guys, thanks for the replys.

I have an ASROCK K8-Combo-z, 2GB DDR ram, BFG 6800 GS OC.

I use my computer for gaming and web design work.

I am finding that games arent working to well (fps) on any higher settings that medium, do i need to change the chip or is it the graphics card?

many thanks.

Has to be the chip letting you down.

That mobo (ASRock K8-Combo-z) is Socket 754, right? If so then consider this...
  • Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-002-AK) £39.99
  • AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-150-AM) £51.99
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940) (FG-000-AR) £13.99
  • Subtotal £105.97
  • VAT £18.55
  • Total £124.52
If you sell the old components, you can stretch for a X2 3800+ if they do come back in stock :(

It supports 939 also.
Do you suggest i get another motherboard still? and do you think my graphics card is still good enough? would i be able to play with full graphic settings if i purchased a new proccessor?

Reviews of the K8-Combo-Z on the net are not that good (compared to newer boards like the 939Dual-SATA2). Might as well upgrade the mobo because its got both AGP & PCI-Express. The latter will be something you'll need to consider soon (upgrading GFX now might not be that good because, A. Mobo is AGP leaving few choices/etc & B. I still think the chip & mobo will be a bottleneck to it).

Something also tells me that the 939Dual-SATA2 will become rare & expensive as Socket 939 gets phased out (a process which has already started) :(

I 'm interested in how this turns out. I have a 939 A64 3000+ and my RAM won't allow me to overclock much. Looking for a last CPU upgrade before a platform change (hopefully not for a while).

Only game where the CPU bottleneck bothers me is Oblivion. It's only with a lots of NPCs (eg Kvatch chapel) that I notice any chugging. I'm keeping an eye on the x2s and dual core Opterons (particularly with the recent price cuts)

The sweet spot for price vs performance looks like it could be the X2 4600, as its lack of extra cache (hence lack of demand) means it's retailing at around the same price or less than the X2 4400. The other thing that's tempting me is the Opteron 185, which has started to pop up in a few places at around £225. I suppose for that price I should be thinking about saving a little more and just heading for Core2Duo but there's something appealing about maxing out my current rig before a complete rebuild.

Hey OCUK - any chance of getting some of those Opteron's in?

ASROCK 939Dual-SATA2, A64 3000+ (Venice E6 @ Stock), Sapphire X1800XT 256MB, 2GB RAM (4x512 Crucial Value), Audigy 2, Hiper Type R 480w

Hi guys,

Would u say this is a good upgrade from a Skt 478 3ghz p4, 1 gig ram, 6800gt to use for gaming??

Sry for not starting a new thread, but the parts u have listed ,i have been thinkin about getting for a while now!
EDIT

Depending on game you'd prolly notice more benefit from mild overclock and extra 1GB of RAM.

Rather than jump in what is kinda the same gen I'd say go to something like an E6300 at a minimum. Unless you can get a fair bit of cash in exchange a 3700+ and £40 for a new motherboard doesn't seem worth it.

Well overclockin is out of the question as my pc is a dell, no options in bios!
The reason for askin the question ,was that i could use my 6800gt and 1gb ram in the asrock m/b ,and build a new gaming pc for not a lot of cash!. I only need a few other components to get new pc up and running plus still keep old pc for the kids, as i didnt really wont to have to buy a whole new pc at the moment.
But if u guys think it wont be much of a performance gain then i will maybe wait a little longer !

thx for reply :)

I'd really try to save up myself, you'll see some gain but you'd see a much more worthwhile one if you wait (till you can afford something more substantial).

*** about if i went for a better cpu i.e 939 x2 i could stretch budget a bit further?
But gettin new m/b cpu ram and graphics is a bit much atm

Not worth it, you need the extra RAM and might as well just sell the 1GB and buy a new 2GB DDR2 for a Core 2 Duo. At 939 X2 prices you could even get the 775Dual-VSTA (to use AGP card and DDR) and a faster C2D processor for less moolah than the X2 for your board (would give performance wise).

I'd still say wait until you can do a proper upgrade though.

Hmmm 775dual-vsta thats tempting, didnt know about that m/b.
just been readin about it on forums, some good some not so(probs ect)
But could be cheap option for new pc, plus keep old one for the little 1's to play on..

thx a lot for your help

will give it some more thought
