Currently running a 3200 in rig as per sig. Just installed Vista Home Premium and reports my cpu is the low factor at 4.1 on windows experience everything else is 5.8/5.9.

For £40 inc p&p the 4000 looks a decent buy to eek a bit power out of my system as dont really plan on upgrading mobo/cpu for a while yet (famous last words).

Do you think this is a worthwhile buy and will I be able to overclock this baby (never o/c'd before) on my A8N-SLI with AMD retail cooler or is it worth forking out another £15 for an Artic Cooler Freezer (which btw does that inc heatsink and fan)?

Cheers,
Simon

Get an X2 3800+ tbh, you won't see much improvement upgrading to a single core cpu. Think its still on special here for this week for about 40 squids as well.

Yeah, the current batch of 4000+ Sandys don't even guarantee to o/c to 3Ghz, so you'd be better off getting a X2 3800+ and overclocking that a bit.

i have that cpu and had no problem overclocking to 3ghz. seemd to overclock a lot better than my old 3000 venice. on vista it rates my cpu as 4.5 (@3ghz). If i was you i would probably go for the x2 but higher than the 3800 i think.

How old is your SD though?

I've seen a couple of reports of the current batch hitting a wall at about 2.7Ghz

I have a KAB1E from a good while back, could prolly push it further if I had better ram, but 3Ghz is enough for me, especially at stock volts.

got it jan 2007. think it was about £70. I remember these being about £380 when the 3000 venice was about £85. As for voltage think mine is on 1.525v, havent been into my bios for a while.

I got mine beginning of last year, was at £90 deal of the week.

Sitting at 250x12 at 1.4v, 53ºC max load temp :)

maybe i should working downwards on my vcore then 0.25v at a time to see if any problems arise! i seem to hit a brick wall just above 3ghz. about 254fsb. makes no difference with a lower multiplier just seem to refuse to go above 3.05ghz.

My 4000+ SD hit 3 GHz although with plenty of heat so I ran it at 2.88 most of the time. Since upgraded to X2 4400+ and I believe the X2 3800+ will clock beyond 4400+ stock speeds so it's a no brainer really at that price.

Cheers for the replies.

Ah I assumed my mobo wouldnt support the X2 Chips. My BIOS revision is 1001 lol. I will try updating it now and if all ok think I may order myself an X2 3800 as seems pretty good value for money.

Of course the single core will be quicker in games that don't use the extra core at all, but generally speaking the very newest games are where you need the performance the most and more and more of the newer and upcoming games do support dual core.

Sup Com for instance the difference is enormous. Oblivion is quicker on my 2.2 GHz dual core than on my 2.4 GHz single core. Flight Sim X much quicker with dual core. Quake 4 same thing. Stalker will be getting dual core support in the next patch. The older games are so quick that it doesn't really matter that they don't support dual core.

Well my current 3200 runs 2.0ghz stock so a 3800 X2 at 2.4 stock is gonna be better all round. Managed to updated BIOS to 1014 - real easy using Asus Update. Will order cpu tomorrow :)

ah the 3800 x2 runs at 2ghz (edit: at stock) as well doesn't it?

Certainly you won't lose anything from going from your 2 GHz 3200+ to 2 GHz X2 3800+ and you'll gain in anything that supports dual core.

AC Freezer 64 Pro has both fan and heatsink btw since you asked, and it's pretty decent for the price and nice and quiet.

K. Yep your right about the stock speed. Not sure where I got that from (prob confused with single core as suggested).

Ive ordered one anyway. Hopefully works ok with XP and Vista 32bit as Ive seen some other threads about having to install AMD drivers for dual core and plenty of probs.

Cheers,
Simon

My SD 4000 ran very nicely at 3.1Ghz (KAB1E) for a good 6 months or so, tis in its box again now though, but was a very good upgrade for the money !

Could prolly push it further if I tried but a 700 mhz o/c was nice enough for me :D

My 165 seems to hit a wall at 2.46 on either core which is a shame but I shall nab me a C2D system in september - waiting to see how the price cuts go ;)
