Look at any of the numerous gaming benchmarks on the net and you'll see that most of the time AMD come out tops in the gaming stakes whereas Intel win when it comes to other apps. Intels latest expensive chips are catching up to AMD for gaming, but AMD still have the crown.

Did you seriously ask AMD X2 versus Pentium 4????
or is that a typo.

The X2 will be better at everything, AMD are better at gaming at the moment, (although the gap is getting smaller), and if you are using apps that can use multiple cores it will also process video and stuff much better.
Around windows the X2 will be nippier than the P4 too.

Then you get onto the conversation of how much cooling each would need, oh AMD is better their too.
And there is more choice of motherboards for AMD.

AMD Daul core is better than the P4 chips in every way. :)

fro chip idd say 280-300 max! and £100 for mb
Abit KN8 Ultra nForce4 Ultra (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-087-AB) £76.32*Including VAT

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA4200BVBOX) (CP-126-AM) £258.44*Including VAT

Very good mobo & great CPU.

Will do everything you need, from gaiming to multitasking.

(However if you can stretch your budget go for the X2 Dual Core 4400+; with the extra L2 cache.)

id go with 4400+ or 3800+ if the 4400+ is out of reach. both are better value than the 4200 i think. 3800 can be clocked just as fast for less and the 4400 has more cache and is faster at stock.
