Can anyone tell me how good this is compared to something from the intel range and would it make the basis of a good gaming pc?

A frined has asked me to build one around this to fit in with their budget but I have no idea if it is up to the job.

pretty good for gaming, i used to game loads on a 635 clocked to 3.8Ghz with a 5770, then a 5850, couldn't max everygame but even metro 2033 was playable :)

The Phenom II X4 840 is essentially an Athlon II X4 650 and can be had for around £75 to £80.

However,Bulldozer and Llano are being released next month.

Flaws in the review have been pointed out before, like using 1600 ram on the 955 bottlenecking the fps. Increasing the cpu-nb and giving it a 25% oc puts it ahead of the i3s - which don't oc. Last gen i3 would probably take it if you clocked it, oc 955 > current gen i3 sadly.

Current gen i5 totally destroys both though :) however if using the cheaper chipset i.e. no oc then a hex core from amd with oc beats an i5. Amd has a better upgrade path, intel performs better at stock. Set budget, decide whether you're willing to spend time with a oc and go from there.

Avoid 645 at all costs :)

Yeah dunno how 1600 MHz RAM is a bottleneck lol. The fact that AMD CPUs are overclockable and the Sandy Bridge i3s aren't is important though. They're pretty evenly matched if you get your PII X4 to 3.8 GHz.

The default memory speed is 1333mhz on a 955BE so the use of 1600mhz isnt a bottleneck.

Badly phrased I admit, the cpu is bottlenecking the ram. Having the cpu-nb running at the correct speed for the ram translates to a surprising increase in fps although that would fall under cpu over-clocking. Then again, you shouldn't really use over-clocked ram without over-clocking the controller but it's so cheap these days :D

Despite locking their chips it's quite well balanced for the price point, although the intel mobos cost more and give you slightly less they use less power. As I said, decide on budget and whether over-clocking is an option and go from there. Both have their merits

They have compared a default out of the box BIOS settings against default out of the box BIOS settings.

So there is no "Flaw in the Review"

My 630's great, huge - and I mean massive - difference compared to my old 5000+.

Can OC to 3.5GHz/1.475v, but I keep it at 3.2GHz/1.275v. Leaves it a bit below 95W at higher speeds ;)

I got mine for £53 new from a popular sales place, think they still do them.

Your recommendation was to buy Intel, he could have purchased a Q6600 off the back of that which would have not been better.

Actually I said buy Intel, with links to the new i3 and i5 sandybridge vs AMD

So how you can say he would then go off and buy a Q6600 I dont know?
