Ok so im pretty much new to building, making my new build very very soon iv been told (by the honourable and esteemed overclockers forum peoples):

That theres no real advantage to getting the 6970, for the same price you can get a 6950 alter the BIOS and it 'becomes' almost a 6970.

1) is this true?

2) If you overclock them both will the performance be the same

3) Are they any advantages at all to getting the 6970?

4) How Easy/Safe/Reliable is it to do? (Bearing in mind i know a little about comps but have never overclocked or altered the BIOS of something in my life)

5) Can it be done to every 6950 or is it a 'hit and miss' thing which sometimes dosnt work?

Any suggestions/advice would be much appreciated

Also, have similar posts on amd 3.3ghz 1100 v. 3.2ghz 1090. And a SSD & SATA2 v. a SATA 3 (if u know what your doing in that region and have any suggestions there plz do look it up and drop a post)

Thanks in advance

From what I've gathered so far the rate at which 6950s unlock into 6970 is very high (around 90%). However, there exists the possibility that you may brick your card, although not certain. If you overclock them both the 6970 is still going to have 128/4 shaders more and 8 texturing units more (more texture fillrate). Not sure however that this justifies the price difference between the two entirely.
Also just get the cheapest (black edition) six core cpu and overclock that.
SSDs only help with loading times and starting up appplications they give no real benefit in terms of fps.
