"Faster than the world's fastest graphics card. We should know. We built that too."

Which card are they referring to? As far as I'm aware, before the 6990, the GTX 580 was the performance king? Unless they mean the 5970, which wasn't always the fastest card up till now was it?

5970 had the highest average FPS in the majority of games. The 580 was faster in quite a few though and usually has better min frame rates.

Nvidia have the fastest GPU, very easy to whack 2x GPUs on one card and claim fastest card. AMD don't seem capable of beating Nvdia in the fastest GPU stakes, they need two GPUs to do it. The 590 should claim fastest card back soon, and then Nvidia hold that and fastest GPU crown.

IMO AMD have been disappointing with the release of 6900 cards. Although 6950 is one of the best bang for buck, 6970 performance hasn't been very impressive compared to 5870. Then again these are just the refreshment of 40nm process.

Will have to see how AMD performs in the next process.

How about "More expensive than Crossfire 6970s, but slower than it" for a slogan? lol

True but how about... 1x pci-e slot which has ZERO limitations for mobos with only one slot...

Think of it that way and the fact it uses less power than 2 cards and you have to admit that its a good card.

Can you imagine if someone like ASUS came up with a ROG card using a pair of full fat 580s? God that would be insane!

WHy imagine, get 2x580gtx, it will be cheaper, overclock further, run cooler and quieter?

As for Raven, good to see him firmly back in the Nvidia can do no wrong, AMD can do no right camp.

If its so easy to put two gpu's on one card, I mean SOOOO easy, why didn't Nvidia manage it last gen exactly?

That annoys me a little, I believe it should say worlds fast DUAL graphics because it will be limited to crossfire drivers for performance, and because it is

Interestingly Techpowerups most recent review (6990 single card) shows the 580 faster than 5970 at 1920x1200. Historically the 5970 has always been shown to be faster on tup.

Edit: This mainly seems to be due to COJ 2 and Civ 5 where it seems there is no CF benefit.

You're not honestly suggesting that NVIDIA doesn't have the capability to build a dual GPU card (last gen, or whenever) are you? Because if you are, then LOL

I'm sure it isnt easy to build a dual GPU card, but I would be amazed if the GTX590 isnt 1024 cuda cores total and beats the 6990 hands down. Of course they didn't do it with Fermi revision one as it would have been an expensive embarrassment but with Fermi rev 2 they are back in the game.

I also expect it to weight in at £600 - £650

As opposed to the " AMD can do no wrong, Nvidia can do not right camp " ;)

TBH I don't think the GF100 was ever a viable option for a dual GPU card, it needed refining which it has been with the GF110. I think we will all be pleasantly surprised at how much cooler and quieter the 590 will run compared to a 6990, Nvidia have done their homework on GFX cooling after the stick they took over GF100.

Not meaning to start trouble here but I thought it was AMD/ATI's gameplan to not bother with huge GPUs, not that they aren't capable.

With regards to nvidia's dual GPU card I don't think it's going to be guaranteed win unless they throw power requirements out of the window. For a rough comparison SLI 570s are slower than a 6990 but draw more power (~70-80w) so for the green dual GPU card to beat the 6990 it'll either need to use 580 cores or faster clocked 570s (assuming at all that it will be built on current tech). Both of these would beat the 6990 but at considerably higher power draw.

Everything I've just said here is pure speculation and I couldn't care less who ends up with the fastest single card, I'd never spend more than £200 on a GPU, let alone nearly three times that.

IMO, As for the doing 'right and wrong' stuff:

GTX 400 range = Fermi done terribly wrong
HD 5000 range = DX11 done brilliantly
GTX 460 / 500 range = Fermi done brilliantly
HD 6000 range = Disappointment, hardly any better than the cards it replaced.

The 400 done DX11 better than the 5000 cards when you look at the performance in one of DX11s main features tessellation. One could say the 500 cards are hardly any better than the cards they replaced, Nvida had to boost clocks to make the performance difference not so mediocre.
