AMD claims up to 67% greater performance than a single Nvidia GTX 580

Is it just me or does 67% sound a little... well... disappointing? I know basically it's two downclocked 6970s, but I would have expected better results considering the great Xfire scaling on the 6 series.

Guess it's unlikely that Nvidia's 590 will be dual 580 isn't it?
So if the 590 is 2 570s I wonder how that will compare.
If the 590 is basically 2 560s, maybe ATI will retain the top performance card for another generation?

I am wondering what the temps will be like with this, and also the noise.

Radeon HD5970 4.64 Tflops compute power
Radeon HD6990 5.10 Tflops compute power (rumoured and unconfirmed)

The HD6990 on paper has a 10% increase in compute performance over a it's predecessor.

Radeon HD5970 297 watts TDP/464 FLOPS = 1.56 flops per watt
Radeon HD6990 375 watts TDP/510 FLOPS = 1.36 flops per watt (rumoured and unconfirmed)

On paper the HD6990 is 14.7% less efficient per watt then its predecessor.

I find if very odd that they have oriented the cpu cooler with the fans towards the gpu instead of the more conventional towards the back of the case setup. I wonder if this helps with cooling the gpu or if it only serves to create turbulence and circulate hot air in the case
