AMD 69XX delayed officially ?

I just can't see it being a yields issue: AMD/ ATI have been on the 40nm node for a while now. They should know how to design for TSMC node and with the process now more mature, evidenced by the rumoured improved 480 and 580 yields. The only reason for a yield issue that would be more significance that NVs is to have a die as larger/ larger than the 520-530mm^2 monolithic GF100 and GF110, which is not AMDs current design philosophy

I also don't see AMD being surprised by GF110 results to re-evaluate clock speeds again. A fully equipped GF100 with clockspeed bump must have been where AMD have been targeting at the outset for Cayman. In any case, changing clocks by more than 5-10% would take a lot more than a few more weeks, due to all the re-validation that would be required.

My bet is that the drivers are fragile and/ or underperforming. This is not suprising since the architecture is the first large change for a number of years and with the additional few weeks of tweaking, cat 10.12 will be in a better position. ATM AMD already suffer so much from people deriding their drivers. They don't need there next generation launch to have more drivers problems.

Firstly, I see no proof thats from AMD, secondly, Guru3d will be under NDA, and as such you aren't allowed to disclose the fact you are under NDA, I've yet to see a sight that gets review cards and signs NDA mention when the NDA is lifted in a random news post, frankly, ever.

Likewise, if anyone noticed it, it says

We will be providing additional information on these products, including the exact date and time of the NDA lift, in the weeks prior to launch.

NDA's are subject to change, what very often happens is a company will give an NDA up to intended launch date + 2-3 weeks, so if they want to push it back a week, nothing extra needs doing, everyone who signed it is still under the NDA.

So on the off chance it is from AMD, and some idiot posted something he shouldn't of, it doesn't mean it will launch on the 13th.

Either way, who gives a monkeys, I might get a 6950 if its not cut down to far from a 6970, I might not, I'm not dying to have the performance today, and if the rumours pan out, 580GTX stock might be gone in the next few days and not back for a while, in which case the 5970 is the best value and by far the fastest card available in the next few weeks anyway, hardly anything for AMD to cry about.

379 euro's for a 5970 at the moment, which is rarely behind the 580gtx, and often 30-40% ahead.

If anything the 580GTX's lack of real performance, and heck look at Raven, the real lack of being a worthwhile upgrade from a 480/470gtx, its not like even Nvidia fans are killing themselves to get a 580GTX. I'd say seeing how much of a small small upgrade the 580GTX is, it would be more likely to stop AMD rushing, than cause them to launch earlier. IF it was 20% ahead of a 5970 AMD have a reason to launch with 8 cards in stock in every country, now theres more reason to wait to have thousands and thousands available in launch week. All assuming of course, they can't still do that at the end of November.

I would go along with this, 6970 will have the jump on the 480 but the 580 put a spanner in AMD's works, so now they go and flash all their 69** cards with higher clocks to try and get some gains over the 580, no point going on rumored spec either.

If I was any director of a GPU company and I was in this situation I would release the lower clocked version with more overclocking headroom then something people will find to be a bad overclocker.

Everyone wants something for nothing and more free overclocking (which is looked at on first reviews of new GPU's) will catch peoples eyes more then having it the same price and performance as the 580.

But was the GTX580 meant to be a big upgrade? It's certainly a bigger upgrade than the 285 was over the 280, at least you get a increase in the shader cores aswell as a Mhz increase

AMD have dropped the ball and the range has been delayed by a month.

6950/70->DEC
6990->JAN

They have missed the lucrative Chrismas shopping window and this has nothing to do with 580 GTX though. The idea that they missed it because they want to beat 580GTX is silly. Because theres no guarantees that it will beat it.

They know exactly how fast the 580 is now, and they know exactly how fast the 6970 is at various clock speeds, so if it's just short of 580 performance it's very easy for them just to bump the clock speeds a bit. The 6970 could even be so fast that they decided to drop performance to give them more room in the future for new products.

Dont you guys realise that they missed the Christmas shopping period?!
Released week of begining of 19 DEC?
This would not of been done just so they can tweak the bios to beat 580GTX!
Delays to 6990 also show that there is a problem somewhere in the manufacturing...

I doubt this...

Wasn't there supposed to be a shortage of components from Texas instruments?

Even without yeild issues they'll have no problems selling their cards, Xmas or no Xmas. I don't buy that they've sacrificed production of their flagship cards in order to continue churning out mid range cards.

Here we go yet again.

i read in this very forum today a certain member saying that you could not trust a certain site because it put amd/ati in a positive light. Now all of a sudden we are supposed to trust a different site without question just because it puts amd/ati in a bad light if the delay is indeed true. I am so glad some other members see what this certain member does otherwise i would think i was going mad.

I think AMD's own slides tell the story.

6990 was scheduled to be released this year. Its now been put back to Q1 2011
6950-70 was scheduled to be relased in NOV and on AMD's own slides its shows Q4 2010......

6970/50 have taken 6990 slot and 6990 have been moved to JAN/FEB? Simples.
I wanted to wait but I really cant be asked waiting till JANUARY to MAYBE get 5% speed boost over 580GTX and save MAYBE some £50....
