Wondering peoples views please ?

I'm really stuck between deciding between these 2 processors as effectively the price difference is only around £40-50

7700 - one CCD - potentially higher boost frequencies - potential to be quicker in some games than the 7900

7900 - 50% more cores - complication of dual CCDs - some games possibly slightly slower ? Some games now and in future may utilise the additional cores ? for instance one of my main games will be FS2024

FS2024 may indeed use more than 8 cores if available but its been very difficult to find many definitive views and even if it does to whether it makes any difference to frame rates

maybe if are recording a replay etc in FS2024 may start utilising more cores, more complex areas of scenery etc - hard to tell

really tough one

many thanks for any views

If I remember right, the single CCD vs two on the Zen 4 chips, was not a major factor until the x3D chips where because of the way the VCache was connected, meant there was issues with performance in situations especially if they needed to have that software piece that helped control how software was run. Otherwise in most cases, there was little to no known issues.

The only other main difference between them I can think of, is the power (110W vs 170W was it?) they pull and hence what cooling you would need to keep them from throttling (fewer options on the 7900 and 7950 compared to the 7700). So pricing of cooling would also be impacted on, driving up costs in most cases. But of course, more cores, more performance when cores count.

no point in 7900 for gaming, it will always be slightly slower

I would actually go the other way in that price range, consider 9600X (+cooler)

i would stick with the 7700

by the time games start to use more than 8 cores reliably, you'd probably already have upgraded...
...or if you haven't, then the stronger single-threaded performance of the newer CPUs would be a more significant factor

thanks very much for your replies - I did consider them very carefully and they are very valid points

but I decided to go 7900 - I might regret it - just found a couple of posts where people seemed to think that FS2024 loads up all cores and that will be a benefit worth £40 to me if is the case

as I said I might regret it and I do very much appreciated all of your inputs thankyou

now Iv'e just got to work out whether to get 32gb of DDR5 CL30 or 48gb of DDR CL36

it's never ending ! going to be quite an upgrade from my Xeon E3-1225v3! - the 3060Ti won't know what's hit it lol

Have heard things about that game pushing the ram hard, so I think you'll want as much as you can afford, even 64GB.

thats what I've heard too thankyou

if you want CL30 > 32gb it starts getting real expensive

CL38 48gb seems quite reasonable, when you get to CL30 48gb its only a tenner or so more for 64gb so at that point the 64gb becomes a no brainer

If it was me, I wouldn't even worry about buying the Crucial 5600 C46 64GB kit that is on a deal, yeah... it is dog slow, but if you're running out of memory you'll appreciate the capacity much more than the small loss in performance. It is cheaper than some 32GB RGB kits :o

With the 7700X you have one 8 core chiplet vs two 6 core chiplets on the 7900X, for gaming the 7700X is going to be better.

In gaming you don't need more than 8 cores but 8 is better than 6 and while yes the 7900X has 12 because of the way that is laid out in gaming terms its a 6 core with another 6 tagged on, while if the game needs to use the other 6 it will' its better to keep it all on one chiplet, IE a single 8 core.

Bought the 7900 but before opening had a change of mind and decided on a 7700x or 9700x

Whilst waiting to order I came across a reasonable deal on a 7800x3d plus mobo combo - which taking into account current price of mobo the CPU was 350. Bit more than should be but was prepared to pay the extra over and above price for 9700x

Config ended up with

7800x3d
MSI Tomahawk
64gb Kingston DDR-6000 CL30

bit of an upgrade !

Lovely I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it.
I've recently been doing some 6 core gaming (ISH) with a 7900X3D performance has been faultess but I do have that niggling feeling about those extra 2 cores so I'm hankering after a 7950X3D!

Both those cpus very nice I was tempted myself with a 7950x3d but I only have a 550w PSU (Corsair RM550) and probably pushing it (3060Ti) as is plus another 100 on top of the 100 I paid extra for 64gb. S 32gb RAM and was all getting (even more) expensive !
