AMD 7800X3D CPU Running Hot in Windows but Cool in BIOS - Need Help!

Hello everyone,

I've been experiencing some peculiar issues with my AMD 7800X3D CPU on an MSI Tomahawk B650 WiFi motherboard cooled by a Cooler Master MasterAir MA824 Stealth. At idle in the BIOS, the CPU temperature reads a comfortable 44°C. However, once I boot into Windows, it reports a concerning 81°C while still at idle.

Furthermore, when I play Starfield, despite running the game at 60fps on ultra settings in native 4K, my system reports only about 4% CPU load. This seems quite improbable given the game's demands.

Another anomaly is that the individual core temperatures are all significantly below the 81°C mark, around 40-45C, which adds to my confusion.

My GPU is an AMD 7900 XTX, and it seems to be performing as expected.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue or can provide insights on why my CPU might be reading such high temperatures in Windows but not in the BIOS? And why are the individual cores showing much cooler temperatures compared to the overall CPU temp?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

HWInfo64 shows the cpu temperature as 81C but if you expand it to see the individual core temps, 6 of them are at around 32C and the other 2 are around 50C.

Tagging in on this as i'm getting the same with a 5800x3d.

Two cores are running very hot compared to others. Checked cooler seating. Checked paste application. All looks good.

Can you post a pic as I see lower temps on the individual cores compared to CPU Tctl/Tdie but by 10C not 40C :p

i dont have a x3d but a 7950x and around idle i see 40-50c, only when i start to play starfield my system gets hammered, my cpu spikes to 91c package but individual cores stit in the mid to high 70's, certain parts of the game make all cores push into the mid 80's, try adjusting your power option settings in control pannel, see what balanced or powersaver do.

i would however check the thermal paste between the cpu and cooler, make sure the center of the cpu ihs is covered, a even thin layer should be applied, its possible parts of the cpu may not being covered and causing such high spikes at idle, but then again you say you can play starfield, 81 idle your pc should shut off if you launch any game if that was the case. dont forget ryzen 7000 is very diffrent from other older generations from amd and intel, this gen are designed to run hot, upto 89c is ok for x3d and 95c for non x3d, i would personally be worried if individual cores start going past 89c, but your well below that threshold.

This is the info AMD Adrenaline is giving me while in game. CPU temp actually goes down and says utilization is only 2% which is crazy and can’t be right. Like I have mentioned I’m playing at 4K ultra 60fps native. There is no way cpu utilization is only 2%

from what i can see temps actually look very good, i suspect that when windows has a background task its hitting the cpu which is why your seeing temp spikes, out of intrest in hwinfo64 how many cores are being loaded up in starfield, my 7950x on average is using 12-13 cores, i also play at 4k ultra but uncapped and get around 80-100fps in game.

do you have a lot of programs starting up with windows, maybe a couple of them are hitting the cpu hard, if not have a look at your thermal paste application, core 0,1 and 2 are pretty warm tbh if idle, the rest are all spot on.

In hwinfo all 8 cores are loaded up during the game. My fps is capped to 60 because I’m using a 60hz TV as a monitor. I shouldn’t have any program’s starting up with windows as it’s a fresh install. I use a Mac normally and game on the PS5 so I built this rig to play Starfield basically, hence why it’s plugged into a TV.
