AMD 7900 vs Nvidia 4080 vr game benchmarks

Not really surprised. The same advice for VR users as before this release. For the best VR experience go Nvidia.

I don't agree with the Fine wine thing either. And you can be pretty sure that VR is going to be way down the list of priorities for AMD.

Was really hoping AMD’s new xtx cards would be at least faster than 4080 to help with competition keeping price in check. Instead it seems their release has caused Nvidia’s price to hold or go up a bit.
To be fair it’s only ACC that it can’t achieve 90fps on average so would still be a good VR purchase

If you made that statement in the GPU forum a bunch of AMD fanboys would have jumped on you saying things like, "oh you only want AMD to be competitive so you can buy Nvidia cards cheaper" and other equally stupid comments.

No, we want AMD to be competitive so we can buy AMD cards and hopefully competition can drive prices down from both manufacturers!!

The 3080Ti would be a better buy than the 7900XTX for VR at this moment. But maybe AMD will have driver updates out pretty quickly that will help out with VR and some of the other issues they are having at the moment.

There's literally three brain cells in that part of the forum. Much better having this thread here.

On the one hand I’m glad I made the right choice for my use case by sticking with Nvidia this gen, on the other I can’t help but be disappointed that AMD again seems to be significantly worse in this area relative to pancake performance.

As has become my motto when it comes to RDNA, maybe next gen…

Edit - Dayum, really hope this is due to driver issues “The 7900 series may benefit from some attention to VR from the Radeon driver team as in many cases it even falls behind the RX 6900 XT.”

So true. It's a bit sad though. I don't get the brand love for Graphic cards/CPUs or Xbox and Playstation. There was even a bit of that here when the Rift and Vive first launched. Thankfully it was only a small number of posters and they didn't hang around long.

Yeah, I love AMD, have always bought their products. VR changed all that though. I had to switch to Nvidia to get a good VR experience. I am back on the 6900XT, it's fine apart from not been as good at VR as it's raster performance would suggest. And the secondary problem of poor codec performance.

RDNA 4 maybe :)

As for driver updates, I think in the short to medium term VR performance improvements will be minimal. Hope to be surprised.

Not that I am buying one, not buying a 4080 either. The prices are too expensive for me. Did you buy a 4080?

A 4090 FE in the end.

The only saving grace, if one can call it that, is that the high prices of the 4000 series means better resale for the out going cards - I got £640 for the 3090 FE at CEX (could have got more private I guess but no fees and absolutely no hassle has it's own value) which means the net cost of the upgrade was "only" £960. Had the 4080 come out at a sensible price the 3090 resale value would have been decimated so the net cost probably wouldn't have been all that different for the upgrade.

I am always rooting for AMD, I've been an investor in them for years now and as far as huge soulless corporations go they are probably one of my favourites... I remain hopeful that this first step into MCM will be the start of Their GPU department's Zen moment - Nvidia will have to follow at some point, they can't just keep going bigger with monolithic dies and at that point AMD might steal the lead in the same way Nvidia did by being first to ray tracing. It's certainly hard to argue they are anything but the industry leader in interconnects and multi chip design.

I'll remain hopeful as ever, but for now I have to confess the 4090 is an absolute monster in VR. I agree that I won't be holding my breath for AMD VR improvements at the driver level, it'll certainly be a low priority for them. As a rule I never buy anything on a promise anyway, it has to be "good enough" at the time of purchase.

Do you do any sim racing? I keep looking at the 4090 (not that I can find one). My head says No!!!! but I'm struggling with my 3080Ti

Yeah AMS2 and ACC are my go to for driving games.

It’s a lot faster in VR than my 3090, I’d estimate somewhere around 80% in my usage thus far… it really is a monster.

I’d say set up a bot alert for a 4090FE if you’re going to get one, no point in paying over the odds for an AIB imo and last drop they stayed in stock for a few hours so should be easy enough to get next time.

Can you send me some dummy instructions please? I've been on discord and telegram but all they ever have is links for AIB ones over £1,900

also, what PSU have you got?

Recently got a 6700XT for my daughter to replace her 5600XT. Great performance/££ ratio.
Yeah sort of stuck with Nvidia with if want good PCVR performance.
I have Telegram set up to give notifications for few places AIB cards, no clue how to get alerts for FEs though

Might want to watch my video on Sim Racing with the 4090 and Quest Pro if you haven't already. 90FPS Epic VR settings in ACC.

Nice cockpit but what about with a load of cars while driving. Play a lot of sims but it’s outside the vehicle I look at > 90% of the time

In the world of pricing gone mad, it's sad to believe that this is the best option out of all the new cards. Saying that, I think you made the right choice, it's the only card that makes any sense when you compare it to previous generations and the increase in performance it has. Paying over £1000 for the other cards makes no sense at all.

If I had the money and was looking for a card for VR, the 4090 would be my choice too!!

Watch the video, I go over this with the performance on screen with a grid of 24 cars.

4090 is the only way to get smooth VR in SIM racing isn't it, unless you drop to non native res and low settings.
If you want the max Clarity, then yes. But even when I had a 1080 Ti, I was running native res with a mix of low/medium/high settings to get the best clarity my hardware to produce in ACC etc.

Seasonic 1000w prime thingy

Don’t want to fall foul of any forum rules so won’t post any links. You’ve got telegram already, just need to Google for FE partalert and I’m sure papa Google shall show you the way.

Yeah it’s a bit mad… I do feel somewhat mixed about it, I’m ultimately part of the problem by paying these prices.

Depends on the headset and game tbh. Project cars 2 or to a lesser extent AMS 2 can run pretty well these days, Rfactor 2 is very easy to run relatively speaking too. 4090 definitely makes it a lot easier to run at good settings though.
