AMD 7xxx vs 'R' range?

Hi all,

I've been out of the PC world for years but was just looking at the available cards (AMD) and I have a question;

The specs of the 7xxx series are similar to the 'R' range yet priced less,
Is the name the only thing that is different or did this new series bring anything new?

They are literally the same.

From what I understand they are almost the same, although the high-end 7950/7970 are further up the road in terms of refinement. 79xx>Rxxxx (except 290)

r9 290/x are brand new cards. These are more powerful than any single gpu solution the 7 series had.

r9 280x is pretty much a 7970 and so on.

If the specs look similar then it's pretty much a given its a rebrand.

There is another new chip in the line up but it's more low-mid end. I think its only new though because it has true audio which the rest of the rebrands don't.
