AMD 890GX review

Damn,
I'm glad that I didn't splash out 100+ on 790FX and got 40quid asus instead, might upgrade to that later on.

I'm wondering how the new 4290 IGPU will perform, if it's anywhere near 30-40% faster than the 4200 and works bit better with the hybrid it might make a great combo with 4650/4670 and might provide just enough power to run games at low res for under 40quid : ).

If you check out the article over at Anandtech the GPU performance is exactly the same the 4200.

Looks like a fully featured board, laughing at the "Onboard Core Unlocker" :D

Just bought a 785G board too... Ah well - can always upgrade later if USB 3/Sata 6GB/s takes off anytime soon. :D

That's a nice looking board, the "core unlocker" switch is a nice little touch, which will make unlocking processors a lot easier.

But the question is, is it worth getting one of these over the older 790FX boards? In particular the Crosshair III Forumla :)

6gb/s sata, usb3, ddr3 up to 1866mhz. Those seem to be the main performance improvements over the 790fx

On the 790FX using 1333mhz or 1600mhz at various timings made no difference to FPS whatsoever, will be interesting to see if the 800 series chipset has better scaling for memory clocks.

Just thought I would share some info, if anyone would like me to post the screenshots I can do but I've got nothing to gain by lying but anyway.

Graphics Card: GTX 295

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition @ 3.6GHz (3.8Ghz = add extra 2 fps)

Ram: OCZ Blade Series 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000 Triple Channel (Tested at various timings using 2x2GB) / OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Dual Channel (SAME RESULTS)

Crysis 1600mhz 7-7-7-24 = 54.98 fps

Crysis 1333mhz 7-7-7-24 = 54.43 fps

Crysis 1333mhz 6-6-6-24 = 54.87 fps

Crysis 1333mhz 9-9-9-24 = 52.98 fps

Conclusion

For gaming you don't need the best ram for AM3 rigs, in terms of FPS performance, spend the extra cash on a better graphics card etc.

Why would the chipset make a difference to memory clockscaling when the memory controller is on the CPU?

I've not had chance to have an in-depth examination of this new chipset yet but I'm thinking this is just a Bells & Whistles upgrade (USB 3.0.SATA-III etc), totally relevant for someone building a rig fresh and who tends not to upgrade that often . . . . I can't see any reason someone would want to swap out a 760G/785G/790X/790GX etc . . . unless there is something I am missing? :)

Looks decent enough, bit pricy compared to the £60 boards but that's probably just me (I lick my lips at £40 motherboards!)

maybe saves effort of having to clear cmos if it goes wrong. read people having problems recovering from "non-POST" situations after attempting to unlock a cpu that didnt like it. maybe this will solve that issue.

Why do they always put the PCI-E 1x slot in the most mentally retarded place possible?

Because a pci-e x1 card will work just as well in a x4, x8 or x16 slot as it will in a x1 slot. As such the x1 being unavailable doesn't matter very much.

Is this new chipset expected to overclock better than the previous ones?

***** are already showing off the Crosshair IV - looks awesome
Looking forward to the 890 series of chipsets. I think the main benefits are the USb 3.0 and SATA II native support (The bus can handle it as opposed to Intel boards which limit USB 3 to 250mb/s). That and the fact it will support hte upcoming Thuban processor (yum yum!)
