My little brothers PC
Asrock Dual Sata2
AMD 3700+ 939 Socekt
2GB Ram.
x1800XT 512Mb

Now starts to struggle with new games

Will it be worth upgrading to the best 939 Socket processor ?

If yes which one would you recommend (bang for £)

Not really.

An X2 4200 or X2 4400 would be the best bet, but they're going for silly money second hand. You could probably upgrade the graphics card for the same money or less.

It might not be worth it unless you can get one of the dual core 939 chips. Sadly they often still go for silly money. Well worth a look though.

Not really, they are outdated so you will pay over the odds. Even if you can get hold of a dual core 939 chip for a decent price I'm still not sure it would be worth spending the money on it.

939 is too expensive unless you are able to find something in the MM, id spend money on a new GPU, and try to overclock the 939 a little, even if its just by around 200mhz it will probably help

Either go for new board/chip/ram or graphics card and then upgrade the other half later (assuming you can't do both at the same time).

You can get a Intel E5200, Gigabyte board & 2GB DDR2 for about £150.

get a 939 x2 i still dont think my q6600 is much better than the x2 4400 i had overclocked

That may be because of your gfx card. If you have an older gfx card then it wont make much difference in gmes if you uograde the cpu. but a more modern card would definitely benefit from the Q6600.

So in reply to the OP, you should think about upgrading the gfx first. if you get something very modern then it's not worth staying with S939.But if you only upgrade to something low to mid range (by todays standards) then getting the fastest S939 CPU you can find would be worth it imho.

he's only playing on a 17" monitor. and keeps getting frame rates of 35+ on COD 5 on high settings.

ah well unless i pick up a very cheap CPU he'll have to wait till next year when I upgrade and he gets my old stuff.
