AMD 939

It depends what you're doing on your PC and which X2 you compare it to.

A 3800 would most likely be a little bit worse in games (Although as newer games come out this will msot likely change due to the utilisation of multiple cores coming in to place) but for general apps (Especially on Vista) the dual core will excell.

So in short, an X2 would be better for your use.

Okay thanks for the replies and yes I mainly would use it for gaming :)

btw would th 3800x2 come with a cooler or can I use my existing one that came with my 3200?

Retail CPUs come with coolers, OEMs do not.

So, if you bought the one off ocuk tehn yes it'd have a cooler.

ah okay good thanks.

what you said about games.. Iwas looking at a few benchmarks and the 3800X2 got beaten easily in games like CoD2 by a 3800 stock I think.. are there any new games that actually take use of it?

forgot to ask but would it come with a "thermal compound" thingy aswell?

Thanks again for answering my questions :)

If you buy retail it will have thermal compound allready applied, you just have to remove a piece of tape covering it before you mount it.
As for games that support duel core, the only one I know of is SupCom, and boy does it make a difference.
Best thing I have noticed since going duel core is the ability to have the tv tuner on and do other things without the tv screen freezing and the sound stuttering, it's all smooth sailing

get an opteron 165 :) dual core and will do 2.6 3.0ghz depending how lucky you are.

thats what i did from a winchester 3200 , big jump up for £120 ( at the time of purchase)

got 4000+ today stepping is lcb9e 0640 apmw quick google says it shoudn't be to bad average 125% overclock will see next week :)

AFAIK these 4000+ (not sure if they were OEM or retail) are the last skt939 chips produced with some hitting 3Ghz on stock volts, obviously depends on stepping. Excellent chip for gaming IMO.

Agreed.

Just got a 165 second hand and have it at 2.9ghz @ 1.4v! Awesome performance for £80! :)

Not played with it properly yet so will see if i can get 3ghz. It's sat under a Scythe Ninja @ no more than 52 degrees C under full orthos load!
