I recently built a new system.

However, my 955 is running at 49*c at idle. Only started to run that hot as of today. Its normaly at 36. Can any1 recommend some cooling for the procsessor, or any tips on how i can get it a bit lower.

running it in a antec 900 case. However my psu wires are a mess and everywhere! could this affect it?

my suggestion would be to tidy up your cables as much as possible.
remove all your fans one by one and clean them till they look almost new.
you may have to remove the fan blades and clean the spindle and re apply some WD40 so they spin more freely.
i would also get a can of compressed air to clean out your heatsink.

If you havent overclocked the cpu then the stock cooler should be fine.If you have and had to up the volts for the cpu i would get an aftermarket cooler.
another option could be to clean off all the tim and re apply it.
personally i watercool mines and rarley see temps of above 45c on full load.

Its running at stock speed and volt. I only really noticed it today, was checking the temp whilst playing bad company 2. And during game it rocketed up to 64*c. Is that seriously high?

Also, when installing the heatsink, i didnt use thermal paste cause the stock amd cooler has it pre applied, worth getting some of that artic stuff and applying that?

64c is high for a phenom ii at most it should only be handling 62c
as for the heatsink i would carefully remove all the pre applied tim and replace it with quality tim Artic silver is a good replacment. there are many out there to chose from.
I use this stuff T-C Grease 0098 Heatsink Compound
