Hi,

I don't post much but i wanted to check something. I just stuck together new pc and haven't had any issues so far but the temps are concerning.

AMD 965 Black edition 3.4Ghz
Fractal Design R2 case
Corsair H50 cpu cooler
Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4
8800GT old card
6GB corsair ram XM3?

The PC has to be on the side due to the lack of space where it sits and there is space round the back.
At idle i am getting 40c and if i run prime95 it shoots up to 59c.

Does it sound like a need to reseat the cooler as this seems a pretty high temp within 1 minute of running the utility.

Any idea what i can get out of this and why the idle temp is so high.

Thanks

Have you got the H-50 fan exhausting or bringing air into the case? If you only have the two fans as is standard with the Define R2 then I'm guessing you will have no exhaust fan (if the H-50 is set up as an intake).

Definitely too hot. That's the sort of performance I'd expect with the stock air cooler. Check airflow as stated.

i have set the fan on the back (the stock case fan) with the logo facing out, i think this is drawing air out of the case. The fan at the front pulls air in.
I have the corsair fan sitting in a box at the moment but i can always put that in as well.

I suppose the only thing that could be happening is poor contact with the cpu in that case although the mount is down tight, and so is the cooler.

**Updated**
I pulled it apart again, added in the extra fan to draw the air out at the top of the case.
I reversed the fan nexts to to rad so it act as an intake.
The front fan i left as an intake also.

I pulled the cooler off and reseated it all.

I have run a default prime95 blend test for 10 minutes and its only hit 50.5c now peak, much better than 59c after 1 minute.
looks like idle is about 29, maybe lower but i can't sit here at wait to see how low it goes.

Thanks for the help with the default fan layout.

**update**
The final temp is 27 on the idle after being left on for hours.

Either your room is too hot or your case terrible, or the cooler is sitted wrongly.
Maybe too much/ too little thermal paste as well.

I get better temps with zalman 9700.

The H50 is designed to be used as an intake, getting cold air directly. If you use it as an exhaust it's no better than an air cooler costing about £20.

Good point, never thought about it this way.
I guess corsair as intake and top fan as exhaust if possible would be the best setup.

Antec P180 series really do well with these.

In my Antec P180 mini I get 25C idle temps and low 50s load with 1.52v at 4ghz.

My case has to lay on its side. I may attack the computer desk with a saw to allow it to stand up since the side vents aren't exposed to well on one side.

I spoke to a mate of mine who has exactly the same setup with a different case and he gets pretty much identical figures for the heat at idle and under load. I recall him saying today he is running it at 3.6Ghz and its running at 45c on idle.

Meaker:
Looks like this has 1.4 for the VID 17.50 for the multiplier.
it may be these coolers aren't all that great in reailty, i had a good but noidy fan on my previous cpu and that colled it down about 5-8c over the stock cooler

Redmint:
i will run a small FFT test for you and let you know. So far its been running for 20mins and its sitting around 54.5c

PhoenixUK:
I will pull it apart again and stick some more paste, its using the stock paste that came with it which wasn't exactly very thick to start with. Need to buy some more first :)
