hi

building a media centre for my friend and i am wondering if the a10 6700 would be good enough to stream 3d movies to his 3d projector he has. i think i will. its also a 65wt chip so will be efficient and cool. no overclocking will take place.

this will be playing movies and music and streaming via homeplugs to a WD TV box in the lounge for movies on the main house TV. is the WD box the best for this?

The AMD A10 6700 would more than suffice.

The A8-5600K would be a good choice. It'll do the job fine and is almost half the price. It has a higher TDP but it'll never use that much for this stuff.

The APU is more than enough. I have the A10-5700 in my HTPC. Plays all media absolutely fine including a few games now and again.

is the a10 overkill then? should i save money? i wanted the best one really, which i know is the 6800k but no overclocking needed.

3d movies would be fine too yes?

i felt it would be better than a seperate gpu, which could be added in the future.

It's overkill in the sense that the A8 (even dual core A6) would be fine for this kind of thing, but we're not talking hundreds of pounds here. The only real difference between the A8 and the A10 is a better GPU in the latter, but for video playback you don't need the higher end APUs.

I'd suggest the A8-5600K because of its low price, while you're not sacrificing any real CPU performance (even without overclocking).

They officially support 1866 (pounds? ) but unofficially go up to 2400MHz. You won't gain anything noticeable from it really unless you're gaming though.

You'll have no problem with the RAM, if it won't run for any reason at 2400MHz just drop it to 2133MHz or 1866MHz, though there are loads of benchmarks with them going fine at 2400MHz.

If you want to save more, 2x2GB is fine for what you need.

8 gig of team group 2400 ram
windows 7 pro or 8 - not decided yet
120 gig samsung basic ssd for windows
thermaltake smart series 450 watt modular psu
wdtv live streamer

the case we have is a fractal design r3, 4 sata hdd's and the above ssd and a blu ray. lots of ripping too hence 8 gig ram.

All looks good to me. The board has all the latest tech (USB3, lots of SATA6 ports) too.

You can get away with just about any PSU, since the power draw is very low.

The only thing I can think of is if you're going to be doing a lot of Bluray to h.264 rips then you'll want to overclock the CPU or get the faster one, as it'll make a difference there. If it's straight Bluray to HDD, it doesn't make a difference.
