Amd acquired ATi

im not sure if AMD keeping ATI name or merging completely into one company keeping the AMD name, as well X700 weren't bad cards when they were out, 8 pipe, 6 vertex cards with decent core speeds, plus the XT (i think they were XTs) versions clocked even faster i used to have one with my overclocked celeron D :D

Looks like the ATI name will drop, but not imediately.

They are looking to fully integrate and operate under the AMD tradename from the end of the year.

And instead of having 2 brand names they will be wanting the AMD name to be plastered everywhere to get as wide-spread recognition as posssible. Maybe in a years time you will be buying a PC from the high street with AMD CPU, MoBo and gfx card- with the ads on TV reinforcing this combo.

I see some very nice low end systems coming out with a very efficient very unified AMD CPU, moBo and GPU combined for a good budget price. I think at the high end, it wont make much difference to the NV-ATI battle.

And I'm surprised this thread is as quite as it is- probably the biggest news in gfx cards since NV took over 3DFX.
Are people just shocked that ATI no longer exists and that Nvidia is now the only real wholey GPU manu?

So in future ATIs gfx cards could only be compatible with Ati chipsets (then only compatible with amd processors)

So if you want the best graphics (assuming ati make the best one at a particular time) you have to buy an AMD cpu

I think in the long run the end user will notice very little change.

Think about it. Why would nVidia or Intel want to alienate AMD or ATi over all this? nVidia's best selling chipsets are for AMD processors, it would be a very silly idea financially if they upset AMD.
Likewise for Intel. ATi have made, and will still make, chipsets for Intel processors. Intel will gain nothing from cutting ATi out, if anything they will lose money over it.

I expect it will be business as usual for all 4 companies.

agreed, if ATI do change their name, then i don't think there will be much difference other than a name change.
i doubt that would happen though, everyone knows who ATI are - surely it would cost a fortune in marketing/advertising etc... to change the name over?
