Whats better

the AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 620 2.60GHz (Socket AM3)

or the AMD Phenom II X2 Dual Core 545 3.00GHz (Socket AM3)

this may seem clear to some but im a intel man so dont have much idea :)

Depends if you use apps that are multithreaded. The X4 is great in straight quad core optimised applications, but the lack of cache hurts it in other things.

The PII 550 should be on par with the 620. With an unlocked multiplyer it should be easier to overclock.

550 for games and the 620 for anything that supports more than two cores.

Does core unlocking come into the equation?

EDIT: tricore athlonII make any savings (I think its called the 425)?

Hello Silent Spring,

I made a post here explaining the basic differences between the different AMD processors on offer at the moment

The AMD Phenom II X2 545 3.00GHz @ £70.99 inc makes no sense whatsoever when you can buy the Phenom II X2 550 for £1.00 less! :o

AMD Phenom II X2 550 3.10GHz B.E

£69.99 inc

At £69.99 the X2 550 processor is appealing, good speed out the box, 6MB Level 3 cache so you can sleep at night!, um unlocked multiplier on the processor for nOObzilla proof overclock, turn up CPU-Multi, Adjust vCore, turn up CPU-Multi, Adjust vCore, classic! :D

I would think there is a reasonable chance Black Edition Processors are at the higher end of the scale silicon wise, every single BE processor was born as a 6MB Level Cache-Quad-Core, that's it full potential but there is no guarantee it will be anything more than a superb killa fast 6MB Level 3 Cache Dual Core x2 . . .nuff said! ;)

The other chip in your bag is interesting, a brand new Quad-Core x4 for £80 smackers . . .that's ridiculous!

That chip is based on the Propus technology and it's what I am using myself, actually I have a weakling of a Propus that has one its cores Disabled, this is called a Rana Core . . . Propus x4 . . . . Rana X3 and they are sweet processors for the money.

If you are one of those people that really loves quad cores then the Propus x4 seems to be a logical and safe choice, pay your money get a quad core, overclock it until your happy, job done!

I'm more of a dual core user as one of those chuggin along at 3.0Ghz seems to be a good speed these days, so having the extra third core of the Rana has made me forget even considering anything more, its fast!

Depending on the tasks and games you run and the way you use the PC you have good options, if your a gambling man then the Black Edition X2's makes a lot of sense!

550 for games and the 620 for anything that supports more than two cores.

With more pc games being ports from console titles, I'd personally forget dual core cpu's and go quad.

Buying a dual core now could just mean an upgrade in 4-6months to a tri / quad core to get the best out of a game that needs the extra grunt.

So, go for the best quad core you can afford ( just remember to overclock it... )
