Hi all,

A mate of mine has asked me to build a system of him with a budget of £500.

He needs - Decent ish graphics card, sound card (unless onboard is decent enough these days), 4GB ram, CPU, Case, PSU and motherboard.

I have specced up an I3 system.

ATI HD 5770 1024MB
i3 530 2.93ghz
4GB 1600 mhz ram.
Gigabyte P55m-UD2 MOBO.
Antec basiq plus 550W PSU
Antec 300 case.

This comes to about £505. I think if he went the AMD route, he could probably get more for his money - quad core? but the issue is I have no idea what AMD CPU's/motherboards to go for.

It will be used for basic graphics work for his dad (doesen't use high tech programs I believe tho) and basic word proccessing/internet.

Thanks for all your input

Matt

The Phenom II 925 is worth a look at that budget. Don't really think you need a graphics card anywhere near that powerful for that sort of work.

PII 925 - £115
AM3 870 Motherboard - £85
4GB DDR3 - £90
500GB HDD - £35
SATA DVD Writer - £15
Corsair 400W CX - £35
Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 - £17
GT240 - £60
Coolermaster Gladiator - £50

had a better idea.

The graphics card is still decent, motherboard has SATA and USB 3.0

Hi all

I've just realised I have a 8800GTX he can use, so would be around £425. Would that PSU be capable of a 8800GTX or should I get the 550W one form Antec for £10 more.

Do you think it would be worth paying a little more for say a antec 300 case?

Many thanks
