AMD AM3 cpu spec question

Alright folks,


A mate wants to build a pc, nothing fancy and keep the cost down. He is pretty much going to use it for word processing, browding and the occasional non-demanding game - probably on a 24'' screen (perhaps full HD but games will be played at 720p or so).

Anyway, I wanted to find a cheap CPU/mobo for him so I was thinking something of AMD AM3. What would fit the bill AND be cheap enough (I don't mind buying it second hand if it's not available on e-tailers). Ideally he can start with that and if he wants more grunt he can always pop another AM3 cpu in the board and get extra power.

all suggestions welcome.
 
whats the budget?

he could probably get by with the athlon 2's rather than phenoms. and the motherboard could be about £50 or so.

Would that be an AM3 mobo for around 50 pounds?

I guess the budget for the cpu would be another 50 pounds or so.

The modern AMD® AM3 chips can be used in either an AM2+ or AM3 motherboard . . . does you mate have any DDR2 memory he can use? . . if so so are plenty of nice AM2+ board available . . . if he doesn't have any memory then I guess an AM3 board will be more suitable . . .

With regards to AM3 processors I agree with what sja360 has said and that the AMD® Athlon™ II processor offer a tremendous amount of bang-for-buck
