AMD announce EPYC

What people aren't taking into account is that AMD can sell every 12 core cpu they can make so wouldn't increase sales by charging less, there'd just be more ppl complaining about no chips being available.

You'd have bought a 12 core or potentially a 16 core if they'd priced them hundreds lower?

And they should price it lower because it would push sales?

The supply of 12 core cpus is getting vaporised by the demand and I'd bet a tenner the supply of 16 cores won't survive launch day, launch week or launch month.

Push sales :p

Yes, the 10 enthusiasts who want it fight for the 5 available pieces. :p

But do we have any hard numbers saying how many AMD have actually sold?

I mean, no point have a great product in high demand if you can't actually produce it in sizeable quantities..

Same goes for EPYC, if demand proves high for it.

With some of the biggest companies getting on board with Epyc 2 they're probably going to get priority over everyone else so that might explain the shortage of higher binned chiplets further down the stack.

Why quote me to deflect the point rather than addressing it.

There's no point posturing about the price being too high (by personal metrics) when the demand is higher than the supply at that price. The argument is actually garbage and will continue to be garbage until we see the cpus permanently in stock at that price, at which point saying it's overpriced might be a position worth holding.

Say you can only produce 1 cake a day, as long as it sells for £500 it's worth £500. The day it can't sell, maybe the price needs looking at.

Can we cut the desktop arguments out of this server based CPU thread? I don’t want to scroll past pages of the same old arguments that are already discussed at length in other topics.

What about all the traces in the PCB? the 100's m$ developments costs....? The 11,000 people they pay a good wage for good work.

I love the way a minority of people always expect AMD to give their stuff away for cheap, no matter how good it is.

You get far less for the same money from Intel guys.

We are surrounded by very successful businessmen.

Joke aside, there is no point arguing about prices when no one here has an actual impact on how much AMD charges for their stuff.

Models ending with 0 are Intel scalable, models ending in 5 and it's AMD based but on both Dell and HPe sites I can only see the EPYC 7xx1 models which are not Zen 2. I'm possibly going to order something within the next few weeks so I'm keeping an eye out.
