I'm toying with the idea of a new rig. I'm going to use some old stuff so all I need is a CPU, Ram and a mobo.

I like the idea of a x4 phenom and an Asus board with 8gb ram.

I've been on the overlockers website but as I'm inexperienced I don't know what ram goes with what cpu and board etc. Could someone help me pick some components?
Has Am3 been replaced or is it still viable? Is the ram I need DDR3 or 2?

Thanks guys.

I have a few little questions,

Your HDD and DVD drive? are they SATA or IDE?

CASE and PSU make and model?

Oh, Case and PSU I have thought about yet.

Have or haven't?

Well assuming your case can take a ATX sized motherboard.

This is bang on budget,

What I would have specced.
But if your in for more budget than performance, then you could easily save £100-£150 by going AMD.
You probably wouldnt notice the difference in performance either. I didnt going from my AMD PII x3 to a 2500k.

Sorry, typo. haven't looked at a case yet. Thanks for your help. Can I ask why you prefer the i5 over AMD?

Can I be a pain in the bum and ask you to spec an AMD asus based machine?
I've got a 6870 black edition that I'm happy with.
Also, onboard sound is all I need.

Many thanks.

Because right now all AMD products are...well...dead. All SB (even the i3) blow most AMD stuff out of the water.

This is the lowest 1155 i3 available (i3-2100) compared to the current top end AMD chip (PII X6 1100T)

The i3 only lags behind where multicore processing takes place. Now the i5 is like 60odd% more powerful than the i3.
It just makes sense really.

Is this going to be a permenant build, or just a temp. till BD or Ivybridge come out?

The i5 2500K is the fastest CPU in your budget, the Llano isnt that fast, what it does have though is onboard gfx equivalent to a £50-60 discrete graphics card making it much more capable of playing games than the HD3000 built-n gfx of the i5 2500K.

If you are using a separate graphics card of a reasonable spec? then the Llano is a little pointless.

But it also does one more thing, using a cheap graphics card such as a 6550 etc, you can crossfire it (pair it up) with Llanos built in core to achive a good boost,

could i xfire it with my 6870?

Are AMD really that bad?

They are that bad,

The graphics controllers on the A8 (HD 6550D IGP) and A6-series (HD 6530D IGP) processors are compatible with any AMD graphics card based off of the Turks and Caicos cores (HD 6670, HD 6570 and HD 6450) while the HD 6410D IGP in the A4 branded APUs will only work with the HD 6450 and HD 6350 cards.

A 6870 is a much faster solution on its own.
