Hi, my brothers computer keeps turning itself off and i have just checked the cpu temperature and it is at 59c idle!

This is case in the centre of the room and all the panels off,

How do i measure the graphics card temperature its a geforce ti 4200 and is there a better program than everest because i dont like it very much

Time to clean of the cpu IHS and reapply some thermal compound. Other things to check are that the heatsink is clean and dust free and that the fan is working ok.

IIRC those ran pretty hot anyway - idling at 50c wasn't that uncommon so it's not as bad as it seems.

Do as w3bbo suggested nonetheless.

temps now at 75

temperatures are now at 75 when its against the wall with the side case on etc

This is just running internet explorer to post this aswell!

i didnt c a lot of dust inside his case, there was a fair amount ON the actual cpu itself so i wiped that off but i dont even think theres a heatsink inside the computer,

Sorry but im a noob when it comes to the inside of a PC :(

I know what ram, gpu, cpu, psu looks like and that about it

The CPU will be under a large heatsink and fan (near to the memory slots). You wont be able to see the CPU itself

Can you post any images of the internals?

Does he have any case fans in there? My bet is that either the CPU heatsink isn't fitted properly, or it's so clogged up with dust that it's all but useless.

well it was my old pc and i mean old ;)

I dont have any pics but i will get some next time i can, there was 1 side fan on the panel(case) but it nolonger works because the wires are cut :(

It used 2 work playing games and everything without the side fan so i cant understand how them temps are so high

shouldnt be as high as that imo running an xp1700 @ 2.1ghz which is around 2400xp?? with a lot more volts etc and idleing at 60oc hitting around 65 loaded

running all case fans and cpu fan at 5v so like others have posted check your hsf is seated properly
