Hi, having recently run into a slight problem, I'm no looking for a new CPU to replace a P4 550 3.4 GHz 800MHZ FBS.

So far, I've looked at the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ and 3700+ and I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback on whether this would be a suitable replacement for my previous P4.

If you have any other recomendations of a better CPU than those then by all means let me know :)! My budget is around the £100 mark give or take a few quid.

Well, I am indeed in the process of a full overhaul. I need to upgrade my motherboard as well so the first step was to choose a suitable CPU and then a compatable motherboard to follow.

My current board is Asus PTGDI-LA. Socket is LGA775.
I'm Upgrading because I wan't to get an X1800 XT 256 GFX to replace my current X600 but it won't fit on the Micro board.

The reason I am looking to move from Intel to AMD is because I have 1 GIG DDR Ram at the moment and finding a suitable Intel Mobo which supports DDR has proved unsuccessfull where as if I upgrade my CPU and Motherboard to AMD I have a lot more choice such as Asus A8R-MVP Crossfire or Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe Crossfire for just 2 examples.

It was either that or upgrade my MOBO and move to DDR2 Memory which at this point would cost more than a CPU/MOBO upgrade.

I dunno, what do you guys think?

PC is mainly used for gamining/rendering. (Animation student). In terms of gaiming, having the most cutting edge results isn't too important as long as I can play new games comfortably.
As for my budget, well it could be pushed a little further if there is a better option.

Ok, i was looking through the DDR2 RAM here at OC's and I can pick up 2 GIG of DDR2 for around £110-£130 (Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5). Say I choose to go with this, what would a recomendable MOBO be for the upgrade? On which would allow me to keep my P4 550 for the time being but would allow me to upgrade to a dual core at a later date.

Thanks for this help, its very appriciated.

Slinky.
