How easy are these to overclock and what are the limits ?, recently bought one (with fan + heatsink) its sitting in an M2N-SLI Deluxe mobo with 2GB PC6400 RAM (2x1GB) with a 8600GT, With that little setup running vista ultimate and i thought i would be pushing a nice score in 3DMark06 but i got a measly 4560 and my friend has a 4400+ overclocked and pushing 12 hundred (i think my graphics card is not very good, i am a complete novice) could vista be holding me back ? i have retail versions of ultimate and xp pro so changing the OS is not a problem.

I'm pretty much scared to go into the bios (my old Packard bell is locked so i couldn't even try an attempt to overclock) not really keen on blowing my computer up not long after i have put it all together. :D

Thanks for loooking.

its quite easy to overclock to around 3.3 - 3.5GHz on air / decent air cooler

you'd need to up the fsb from 200, 220 x 15 = 3300MHz

it would be better to drop the multiplier down and increase the fsb higher like i did: (although im not sure how your board will fair with higher fsb)

but yeah your graphics card is holding your 06 marks down
you need something more powerful, but how do your games play?

benchmarks have shown that there is virtually no difference at all between vista and XP in terms of game performance.

It's definately your graphics card, 4560 is quite a nice score for 8600GT, to push 12000 you need a 8800GTX / 2900XT/ OCed 8800GTS.

My games play spot on, Bioshock for example, i have it for both 360 and pc and i prefer it on the pc because it just looks and play much better and smoother, I've only just got this card but i will be looking to get an 8800GTS at some point.

Currently using Air, Scared to use water cooling and to be honest i don't mind air cooling.

<maddness>, What are your current temps at the moment with the 3.3Ghz ?
Currently mine are just hitting 30 but i am going for new fans, and my old computer it never showed my graphics cards temps,On this one it does an my 8600GT is between 47-52 is that not rather hot ?

Thanks for your replys guys

All should hit 3300mhz, 3400mhz and above is down to luck of the draw on the CPU being good and certain steppings help but do not mean its deff going to hit them speeds.

I did not have a chance with mines as of a faulty Crosshair Mobo.

Right ok im going to try and give it a little overclock, But really need some help and i don't really want to make a new thread in the other forum part and clutter it up.

When i go into the BIOS my CPU is greyed out and i have no idea what all the options are. i was just hoping there was a FSB/voltage/clock speed setting or something similar.

What option do i have to change to be able to change all the settings ?

Thanks

Sorry to be a pain, but which part do i set to manual ? im glad i have another pc so i can kind of google an look on here while attempting to blow my pc up heh, It's really all jargon to me but i hope once i have started i will understand more, Just read the beginners guide again and still that confuses me :(

Hmmm Ive seemed to have underclocked it :| its now sitting at 2.639 heh what i did was lowered the multiplier to x11 and raised the bus (cpu frequency) to 300 but got BSOD so i tried again at 280 got a explorer.dll error, Tried at 240Mhz an here i am, running at 2.639 what am i doing wrong ? and which setting actually changes the cpu speed ? there is an AI overclocking option where it says overclocked 10% etc..

I'm useless at this, suppose everyone started somewhere though heh

Here is Mine (on the right) and <maddness>'s on the left
hmm.jpg

I've noticed He has the HT Link @ 1500.2MHz and mines only just 1200.0Mhz. Whats the HT Links option name so i could make it higher.

Ahh right i think i am understanding the multiplier now its just basically mathematics, times the BUS speed by the multiplier so x11 at 300 would have coarse be 3300Mhz which would be 3.3Ghz i think, Does it matter how low the multiplier goes ? does that affect performance also ?

Megaherz is same regardless but the higer the FSB (HT) in sync with your memory the more throughput power you will have.

So say 300x11 is better for some useages than 200x16.5 (pure example not real) both are still 3300mhz.
