Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
I have fondled with the idea of getting a new CPU either:

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-192-AM

Both seem to have good reviews, however I am swaying more towards the 6400 because its faster and that. Although I know I will need to purchase a heatsink & fan, any recomendations as I am useless with all this. I have my stcok fan from my 4200, would that be compatible?

I have read good reviews on this one? What type of heatsink do I need and where are they/how much?

Also would anyone recomend upgrading my power supply? It is a Antec TPII-550 WATT-ATX 12v.

any help would be most appreciated.

I have read that the 6400+ doesnt overclock much at all and that it has the same limits as say, a 5200+ when pushed so for an overclocker not much use. I have also read that the 5000+ has an unlocked multiplier and is the best buy of the lot

Only the 5000+ "Black edition" has an unlocked multiplier, not the normal one

Oh right, quad-core hey! Iam not going to upgrade my Motherboard so Iam going to stick to what is the best out of my range!

Tar anyway fella but I think Iam going to go for something in the now whilst the are fairly cheap, so any suggestions?

My personal view is: i would wait and spend nothing for now. Despite all the reviews etc you might read on core2, you still have a good processor there. I'm not saying that core2 isn't faster, i'm saying that the difference woudn't be enough to warrant a FULL upgrade. As for getting a higher rated AM2, i have always found that upgrading the CPU within a platform to be disappointing (athlon xp 1700 to xp 2400, Athlon 64 3000 to athlon 64 4000). I would say, read up on how to overclock what you have and wait. If you upgrade now for a nice increase, then sonething much better will be released which would make it seem quite pointless. To summarise, avoid 'half upgrades' and enjoy what you have :)

But I want an Umpa-lumpa now Daddy, I would think that £100 for a 6000 is not exactly scrathing the bank! Espicially when it is a much better CPU than my exsisting one. To overclock my 4200 I would need to buy new fans and that as I only have stock fans. And what type of Overclocking Juice can you sqeeze out of a 4200 anyway?

5000+ Black Edition can be found pretty cheap and has an unlocked multiplier. Ordered one myself yesterday. Should be here tomorow hopefully :)

Quick quesion as i am new to this.

I have 200 squid stashed for a new CPU and looking to go for an AM2 Dual Core Black Edition.

Now also weighing in the fact that i have never overclocked before and based on the level of difficulty in the overcloking of these chips would i be better with the 6400+ ?

I'm aware of the basics to overclocking the CPU and hear that the 5000+ can quite easily meet the 6400+ on air without overclocking the FSB on the mobo but is this really true?

Am i better taking the cheaper chip, giving the overclocking a stab on a mATX air setup or just paying out the dough for the 6400+ as i have budgeted for either of these chips.

Because the multi is unlocked with the 5000 black edition, all you do is go into the bios and increase the multiplier from 13 (default) to whatever (eg 15 for 3.0ghz). The chip will do at least 3ghz on stock volts. All there is to it ;). Only thing you need to know is the black edition cpu's dont come with a heatsink/fan (i think).

Ive upgraded to X2 6400+ Black Edition without heatsink (I used Tt Venus 12 which is good one) and bought from Germany - quite cheaper also it look nicely run plus quite cooler -- I would say between 6-10% less heat than 6000+.

Venus 12 heatsink with manual tuning and I turn the speed at 3150rpm that stay between 22oC-32oC but full run like 3.2 Ghz it run at about 37oC-41oC but didnt above 42oC

Well i brought the 5000+ Black Edition and overclocked it to 3.3ghz...

My god the thing runs like a dream and uses so little power its untrue...

Also the heat of this chip is amazing!

Overclocked i am running at 55 degrees on load 40 without...

For £80 its a steal...!

So is it worth getting the 5000 black over the 6000? What air cooler are you using? I was goint to get a Asus square ice thingy.
