Hi

I'm still stuck on Socket 940 and due to the limitations of my motherboard I can't really overclock the HTT whilst using SATA ports (no AGP locks)

I'm currently using an Opteron 146, stepping CAACC 0423XPMW which did 2.3GHz (10x230) at stock volts with ease with the memory at 230MHz. I ran it like this for some time with my old IDE drive but put it back to stock when I bought a new sata drive. I never tried to push it any further

I can get this chip rather cheaply and the unlocked multiplier should allow me to overclock it. Google wasn't being all that helpful, apart from suggesting that 2.5GHz should be easily attainable

If that's the case then it could be worth it (particuarly when I sell my Opteron) as I'll be going from 2 to 2.5GHz.

I'm currently using the ASUS SK8V motherboard with an Akasa EVO120 CPU cooler

Does anyone have any information on this chip and whether it'll be worth going for?

Many thanks

I still have one machine with a similar setup, SK8V FX51, it runs at 2.4Ghz using the multi as you suggested. Im pretty sure you will need to raise the voltage on the cpu as these chips were not as good as the current opteron silicon. My particular chip only done 2.85 Ghz under Phase change when I had a machII.
I would say its worth it if the cost to change is not gonna be too much. expect 2.4Ghz maybe 2.5.
I cant remember exactly but I think they used to use a seperate Sata pci card in the old days that allowed them to overclock the FSB without affecting the Sata drives, could be wrong, that may be another option.
Ill check the stepping on mine later.

Yeah, original FX51s were good for about 2.4GHz, I had mine to 2.5GHz on a Waterchill kit, so good air would probably do the same. Stepping is CAAOC 0346WPMW, though I don't remember that there was any particularly good or bad steppings.
