I currently have a X2 4600+ and was thinking about upgrading to 6000+.

Is this worth doing and is the 89W version (Windsor or Brisbane) still available anywhere? Everywhere I look it is out of stock.

PS Can't use the 125W version due to limited power in Shuttle SK22G2

What do you use the PC for and what's the rest of the setup?
If it's just basic use and some light gaming with old games you won't see any difference, if you want to play some new games it might be worth changing the whole setup.

What's the main purpose and what's your current HDD/mobo/gpu?

Light gaming @ 1280 x 1024 and a fair amount of video encoding.

I am upgrading GFX to ATI 5570 anyway and current performance is OK with Win 7 Exp 5.2 - GFX and 5.3 - CPU, rest around 5.9. Thinking that CPU will become bottleneck due to low Win Exp.

Any idea what to expect Win7 Experience wise with a 6000+?

SK22G2V2
AMD 64 x 2 4600+
GeForce7600GT
2GB RAM
250 WATT PSU
Monitor 1280 x 1024 (Max)
Windows 7

I think you would be better off upgrading both the motherboard and CPU (and to be honest looking at your PC's spec, it really should be about time for you to build/buy a new system altogether) if you want it to be capable or playing new games. Athlon X2 is old, hot and slow for today's standard....

Depending on budget you could look into AM3 and a CPU to go with it. Plenty of budget options in the AMD camp.

IF you want to spend more money you may want to consider i5 750.

Dilemma is CPU = £40 (I have spotted used on EBay) against new rig over £600 to play the odd game. I plan to buy a new rig next year based on what was bleeding edge six months prior but just need a quick speed increase for now.

The performance just doesn't feel that bad and CPU is over recommended for Silent Hunter 5 which I have just bought but graphic card is way under (walking round boat is unplayable but rest seems fine) hence bought the 5570. I should get this tomorrow and at least see what performance is like.

Out of interest what Win Exp are you getting for comparison? Anyone got a 6000+ and can post CPU Win Exp?

Get better GPU instead, sort of what CAT-THE-FIFTH have mentioned, might take a look at the 4770 as well. 5570 won't allow you for much gaming and the CPU is still ok for light gaming at that res I'd say! 40quid is not worth it as for around 90-100 you could already get new cpu+mobo sort of x2 250 + cheap am3 mobo or even x3 425/435 from which both will be a lot better than the x2 6000 and after selling your current cpu/mobo it might work out even cheaper !

The OP has a Shuttle and these take a propriety motherboard. The only way to get a new one is to get one off Shuttle directly which is quite expensive, look for one on a famous auction site or modify the case to take a mini ITX motherboard. OTH, I still like them though and my last two primary computers have been built around a Shuttle barebone.

The newer J1,J2 and J3 series barebones do have mounts for a mini ITX motherboard though.

The case has the PCI-E slot so the OP is limited to a single slot card unless they want to run the computer with the case off!!

I am considering of shrinking down my second desktop into an Elite 360 case too as I find my NSK4400 too big! The Elite 360 case also accepts ATX motherboards too.

tbh i wouldnt bother going for a 6000 Brisbane core ive had one now for a few months and had nothing but probs with it overheating, mabie u could try the windsor.

i have a very similar system to you and i upgraded from a X2 5000+ to a 6400+ and the performance increase was incredible :)

go for the 6400+ and you can find them on ebay np :)
