AMD/ATi or nVidia on Sammy ?

I have gotten a Samsung S23A700D and I'm running it at the moment on my old 5770 gfx card.

But I'm in the market for a new card and don't know which is best to go with.

I really would prefer to buy an msi nVidia 670 pe but I'm not sure what the score is.

I know that AMD cards run 3D on the monitor at full 120hz and nVidia run at 60hz.
But to be honest 3D is not my concern. My main concern is 2D gaming. Will the nVidia card still run the desktop and games at 120hz ? I know it sounds a dumb question but I just want to make sure before committing myself to purchase.
If the nVidia cards do run at 120hz in 2D is there a workaround to get them running 3D at 120hz too ? I know it's not my main concern but it would be nice to take advantage of the feature for the odd 3D movie now and again.

Thanks.

The nvidia card will still run at 120hz in 2d mode :)

I have AMD cards (dual 7970's) running 120hz 2d on an Nvidia 3d vision monitor (Asus VG236H) so it works both ways.

as for what card, a 7950 will run a good £50-90 cheaper and is as fast if not faster then a 670. But its down to the end user really, the 670 is still a fantastic card.

Thanks pgi947 that certainly helps.

I was set on either a decent 7950 or lower end 7970 to begin with as I've been an ATi man for a good while now ( since my last nvidia which was a 6800gt) and have been more than satisfied with them.
But I did get a bit put off by the recent generation of ATi/AMD when I read into the micro stutter created by memory latencies. I really couldn't stand micro stutter as I want a silky smooth gaming experience, hence why I bought a 120Hz monitor.
Do AMD cards still suffer from this or has it been sorted through improved driver sets ?

Appreciate any help regarding this.
I don't often upgrade my rig and like to get it right when I do.

I have next to no microstutter with two cards (supposed to be worse on multi-card). Prior to this I was on a single 7970 for a good 5-6 months and it was faultless, AMD have really upped their game in the drivers department this year :)

I wouldn't discourage buying a 670, but if the budget is tight I'd always encourage looking at a 7950 :)

The 7950 is pretty hard to beat for the price, with good overclocking headroom combined with the 12.11 drivers, the 7950 is a really good card.

Going from a 5770 to a 7950/670 will give you a considerable boost which would cover the silky smoothness your looking for.

There's nothing to set them apart tbh apart from price and games bundle, which puts the 7950 streets ahead for value.

I'm using the same monitor as yourself with 7970/50 CrossFire X-total overkill, yes, but I enjoy my 3D gaming so went for the most grunt(within reason).

The 670 can be used, but you'll lose FS and be left with SBS(not as good, but higher fps), but essentially it can be done.

You can hack the 'eid' on the sammy for Nvidia3D too should you choose Nvidia, but I haven't tried it myself.
