AMD's next high end CPU's are not due until late 2016 which is an entirely new architecture called Zen which will be more in line with Intels CPU's.

Intel are releasing Broadwell a shrink of Haswell at some point in the next couple of months apparently, but that doesn't look so hot.

Skylake Intels new architecture should be released later this year and that is sounding good but nothing solid on it.

If your current PC is what you're looking at upgrading, then you're not looking at AMD CPU's.
Intel are releasing Broadwell, but that's not going to set the world on fire in CPU performance over Haswell.

AMD are not releasing any new chips for at least a year.

Even then, their next CPU line, Zen, may be as pathetic as their previous one, Bulldozer. We simply won't know until we see the benchmarks.

AMD's shrinking R&D budget doesn't exactly inspire confidence that their next architecture will be any better than their previous one.

I don't see the 2003 - 2007 years of AMD ever returning.

Wait till Skylake to upgrade.

AMD are caught between a rock and a hard place unfortunately. Fighting Intel on one end and Nvidia on the other, both huge companies with huge budgets. All this can only be bad news for us consumers.

I yearn for it though!!!
I miss AMD's super era but intel hit the nail on the head calling its architecture Nehalem - it wasn't just a name without merit like 'Dragon' and 'Spider'

I'm always interested in what AMD are doing and hope something brings them some much needed good fortunes... if Samsung buys them from the rumour mill then its all over

Your notice that both these companies are specialists in their field.

Ie. Nvidia's main product is GPUs and Intel's CPUs. Where as AMD are trying to do both.

Wouldn't you be best off upgrading just the GPU atm? Going from that HD 5770 to something like GTX 970 or R9 290 would be massive!

If you'll only be gaming I don't see the point in building a new computer, get a new GPU and you'll be good to go. Also grab an SSD if you don't have one already.
