Hi All,

Can someone cast an eye over the below build and perhaps suggest any alternatives/improvements before I purchase?

There are currently a couple of graphics cards listed because I could do with some help in this area. Graphics card will need to have a HDMI connection so it can be connected to a TV, this is about the only criteria.

Rig is mainly going to be used as a media centre with some occasional light gaming at 1080p.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Sapphire Radeon R7 370 Dual-X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11240-06-20G) £125.99
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £119.99
1 x Asus M5A99X PRO R2.0 AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £115.99
1 x Asus Radeon R7 360 Strix OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £109.99
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti FTW ACX 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (02G-P4-3757-KR) £109.99
1 x Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU) £43.99
1 x SuperFlower FX 450W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply - Black £36.95
Total : £672.49 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

I know its still missing HDD's and more importantly a case but they have been accounted for.

I always prefer Intel - just easier to work with as far as drivers are concerned in my experience

An i3 or even a G3258 would do over the AMD, run cooler, and certainly consume less power. Plus AM3+ is a dead socket now, no future upgrades.

Hi, your CPU/Motherboard/Ram selection comes to £280?

You can get an Intel i5 bundle (cpu/mb/ram) for £225 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=bu-010-as&groupid=2833&catid=2836&subcat=2861

then you can get an aftermarket cpu cooler so it's quieter for £15 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=hs-006-rt&groupid=701&catid=2330&subcat=2666

saving you £40 so far, then you could get the r7 370 if you really are talking about light gaming or in case you get the gaming bug you could spend an extra £25 (over the cost of the r7 370), an get a gtx 960 or an r9 380 for £150 ish.

gigabyte geforce gtx 960 "itx edition" 2048mb gddr5 pci-express graphics card https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-159-gi&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2379

his radeon r9 380 iceq x2 2048mb gddr5 pci-express graphics card (h380qm2gd) https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-103-hs&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=3059

although with the r9 380 you might need a psu with more power, i'm not totally sure so here's a link to a review :- http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/asus-radeon-r9-380-strix-review,5.html

Hope this helps :)

Ok that intel is far better than AMD in raw power but you can't really say that a G3258 would do over a 8320

Wow, cheers Guys there is definitely some food for thought here and has given me a good few things to check out.

This wont be replacing my 2500K as this is for a friend who sent me the details of the 8320 and I sort of went with it and used that as a starting point.

I did have a look at the G3258 which looked like it would suit, but think its only a dual core? But still, should be enough for these purposes.

Am I right in thinking Intel are releasing new chips fairly soon? Is it worth hanging on until next month to see if prices drop?

Lo again, had a bit of a re-think at work. Could shave off quite a bit of £££'s.

AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £83 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-338-AM&groupid=701&catid=1967&subcat=1825

Gigabyte 970A-DS3P AMD 970A (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £53 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-457-GI&groupid=701&catid=1903&subcat=2046

Raijintek Aidos Direct Contact CPU Cooler £15 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-002-RT&groupid=701&catid=2330&subcat=2666

That ^ is out of stock right now but it is AM3+ and 1150 compatible.

Along with the RAM you already picked out it comes to £195 for cpu/cooler/mb/ram.

I seriously suggest the cooler cause the retail ones are quite noisy.

Of course, you could just swap the Gigabyte 970A-DS3P for the ASUS one you were thinking about, saving £63 and then just get the FX-8 8320 that your friend wanted originally.

*not trying to give you a headache, honest.

**Skylake is out in the next few weeks but prices are another matter.

http://www.eteknix.com/intel-skylake-series-prices-revealed/

***article states that you should add on roughly 25% as those are (probably), wholesale prices and it's in USD ofc.
