AMD Bulldozer Finally!

strongly doubt we'll have 4Ghz stock speeds, maybe with Turbo but not stock. the thing is eight 'core' with TDP of like 130W or something, so unless they've worked some magic with the heat output I would like to guess ~3.4Ghz stock (~4.1/4.2Ghz Turbo) though there is a ton of talk on one of the forums (semi-accurate I think) reckoning Bulldozer is a speed design, even talks of double pumped ALUs, etc. though I personally doubt that will be true, since AMD are going for efficiency with these.

stock clock speed isn't so much a concern for me personally, hoping they will do at least 4Ghz on air cooling (should considering they have hefty Turbo!) and retail at <£200, wish there was a concrete release date though so I know when to get some components, like me DDR3, etc. any word on any motherboards other than the Big Bang Conquerer (though it looks epic!), though MSI make good AMD boards wondering if anyone has heard anything on any others?

I've held onto my Q9650 waiting for a decent upgrade. Can't say I got too excited about I5/I7 and Sandy Bridge has left me feeling a bit limp. But Bulldozer has got me interested again in a possible CPU upgrade later this year.

Bring it on.

Overclocking based on TDP. Looks like it should be a pretty easy thing to tune to user specifications, then the limit would be what your custom cooling can dissipate efficiently.

Wonder how this will compare with the standard overclocking methods, and if turbocore is reliable enough.

Actually I have a blog (in english) that covers it.

As to the earlier comment about "AMD needs to have the highest performance or its all over", you really need to look at the CPU market.

In my world (server) top bin CPUs account for (in a good quarter) ~4-5% of the mix. So winning at the top is not as important as winning down the stack.

Would you rather have 100% of the top bin business or 20% of the rest? I am 95% sure that the client business is even more polarized and the top bin is a very small single digit with the vast majority being less than $300.

Winning in this game is all about winning in volume.

I think AMD have missed a huge chance of gaining a bit in the market by not having any AM3+ boards and Bulldozer out right now given the whole SB fiasco.

Agree its a missed opportunity.

Welcome JF-AMD to the forum guys - he works for AMD (on the server side though I think so don't stress him too much ;) )

Hi,
I've actually already read your blog, including the 10 questions about Bulldozer articles...
Really interesting stuff. Welcome to Overclockers Forums!!!

welcome to the forums John, must admit read an absolute ton of your posts on semi-accurate I think, been following Bulldozer for a long long time now! we do need someone not totally into the 'Evil Inside' side of things! ;) by the way I for one think that Bulldozer is an inspired architecture, double the threads for 13% more die-space / module is very good achievement! :)

For them not to be delayed, better than Intel and no bugs or issues seems like to much to hope for, but I will wait hoping to be surprised.
