Does this still work?

Thinking of getting a GTX650 or less, just to take 2 monitors and handle PhysX. I am aware the PhysX can "work" on CPU in a few games now, but it's terrible. So i'm willing to spend a little on an nVidia card to do the job.
It will also mean i can use just my main monitor on the 7970 which will solve a few issues i have.

I need to know whether it works still with current nVidia drivers and what the latest "crack" is for it.

Still works just fine (at least for Batman AA, AC and Mirror's Edge as that's all the PhysX games I own). Haven't updated Nvidia drivers since I set it up in December as haven't felt the need so don't know if it works with the very latest drivers. Have a google for Hybrid PhysX and that should give you the threads you need.

Last night I connected a spare monitor up to my PhysX card, and this has produced a couple of strange results - Just Cause 2 no longer works as it renders the game on the Nvidia card and tries to output either to the 3 screens in Windowed mode, or the single one in full screen! Also, flicking between Extended and Eyefinity mode using Windows+P now always moves my Nvidia attached screen to the left of my big tri-screen. It only takes a second to move it back to the right of them, but it's a little annoying. I am currently looking at getting an adapter to move the 4th screen to my 7970 which I am hoping will fix the issues.

Short version, 7970+PhysX card works fine, and has done for the past few months. Since adding a screen to the PhysX card, it's gone a bit squirly so you might expect some issues with screens attached to both cards.

I was recently thinking of going down the hybridPhysX route again, but when reading up on it again it's looking like the newest PhysX won't be able to be patched:

It seems PlanetSide2 has some code to prevent the PhysX from enabling (on the CPU) when nVidia is not the Primary card, similar to the PLA-demo's "bug." Since CPU-only works fine with all other PhysX3 titles now (due to SSE-support) I don't see the incentive to hack version three. Besides the fact that it won't be as simple this time, (as there are redundant checks) the original reason for the patch was that with version two, PPUs were necessary as CPUs were hobbled due to the NVidia's bug. With version three's SSE support PPUs are no longer necessary (except for slow CPUs) so there is no reason to support 3.x anymore. Rest assured, Hybridiz will continue to support all games in the future using PhysX SDK versions up to 2.9.9.x (as those will be the last to need a patch)

From P10-17000-the author of the new way to patch PhysX-Hybridize(which is also the thread with the patch you need).

I was thinking of getting a 650/650ti to try it out and also have a fiddle with Nvidia 3D using the eid overide hack to check for myself if/how my monitor does work(for future gpu purchasing in mind) and to enable lower idle clocks in my 79 over dual screen.

If you do want to give it a shot, bear in mind that it works better in combination with the 7970 using a 640 upwards as older gpu's can cause heavy stutters in heavy PhysX intensive calculations due to differing vram/bus speeds.

I also read up that with Nvidia 6 series, higher clock speed can outgun lower clockspeed/more cores.

If anyone is interested and has an older AMD 6 series gpu, it's not as much an issue using older Nvidia gpus as the vram isn't as fast in comparison with the 7 series.

@Stu, JC2 won't run hybridPhysX apart from a few tiny flags in the time trials, that's all you get running it alongside AMD and as you found out the display from your 460 needs to be disconnected for it to render on AMD.

For the bokeh filter to work, the Nvidia gpu has to render the gfx too.

Cheers for the input guys. Been googling and I'm thinking I may have issues with screens on the nVidia card. I can always try it and send it back if it doesn't work..

Sorry, didn't explain myself very well. JC2 has worked fine for the last few months using the 7970 to render & display the game, with my 460 PhysX card doing nothing. Since I added a 4th screen last night and attached it to the PhysX card, JC2 will no longer render the game on the 7970, it now insists on rendering the game on the 460 (Afterburner shows 99% usage on the 460, 0% on the 7970) and then either displays it in Windowed mode on 3 screens, or Full Screen on the 4th only! Weird, but must be something to do with the hard coded CUDA bits in JC2, nothing to do with PhysX.

been thinking of doing this too and buying a cheap 3d monitor just for movies while keeping my 7950 for my 27inch dgm
whats the best bang for your buck phsyx/ 3D Movie nvidia card ?
