AMD Card price drop...?

670 aint dropping, get the 7950 and clock it, 670/80 performance depending how good a clocker you get, can't be sniffed at for £240.

Even if the 7950's drop in price, they won't drop below £240, so I would get that HIS one while you can even though I'm not a fan of blower coolers, that one is better than the reference cooler.

It will be a few weeks before the 660's drop in price and nvidia don't need to drop the 670 price just yet, its only a few months old. The 680 is probably the first in need of a price cut.

The HIS 7950 on offer is a great deal. If you are after a new GPU and you are not tied with Nvidias 3D vision, buy it :)

AMD's prices are already lower than Nvidia, i don't think they actually need to do this.

This looks very aggressive from AMD, Nvidia have to respond.

They don't have to respond. It all depends what their sales are like.

AMD's 7970/7950 were massively overpriced as well for periods of time after their release.

Agreed. Also if nvidia are having low yields like their CEO has suggested maybe they are happy selling relatively few cards at a higher price rather than pricing more competitively and not being able to meet supply.

Didnt see a pyramid from Gibbo :(

Good point. There were real 680 supply problems at release when they were the same price or cheaper than the 7970. Didn't look good from their point of view.

Nvidia's taken over now with the cheapeast 680 being £79 more than the cheapest 7970 - Cloud cuckoo land, they must be going broke :p

And as was said when the 7970 launched, its not OK for AMD to charge high prices but its OK for NV to do it.

Just because somebody said it's OK for Nvidia to charge high prices but not AMD doesn't make it stand up anymore as a valid point :)

What makes it valid is that people are still willing to pay more for NV cards as usual even when the performance is closer than ever.

Yeah but you're saying it's "OK". It's not OK is it?

It's OK for them but for consumers it does limit your choice a little. I think most 680 owners purchased when they were cheaper than 7970's anyway. Then I would imagine sales dropped off as 670's arrived for almost the same performance and far cheaper.

No I don't think it's ok, l never said it was personaly.

Sorry your points just aren't following a logical order:

I said that just because somebody said it's OK for nVidia to charge high prices but not AMD doesn't mean it's a valid point.

You then said that it is a valid point because people are paying more for nVidia cards when the performance is close together. (fine)

I take that further and agree that although cards are selling still at the high price point it still isn't OK as it limits choice. You have already concurred with this being "OK" (valid point) so I don't understand your comment above.

If I haven't understood your point then could you perhaps be clearer to help prevent confusion?

Actually I don't think it is right to generalise like that...the fact was that 7970 simply ain't that hugely faster than the GTX580, if comparing to like GTX580 vs 5870...which is while the premium doesn't seem to justify.

And even for last gen, Nvidia only really charge a killing for GTX580, whereas GTX570 and below that offer simliar, if not better performance and even at a lower price point than what AMD had to offer (GTX560Ti vs 6950, GTX570 vs 6970). But because AMD put price premium on every single card by working the pricing downward from the 7970 for this gen, we ended up with even a 3rd fastest card (7870) asking for a ridiculous £270-£280 on launch, which is effectively asking £270-£280 for a "mid-range" card. It is only now that the 7870 price drop down close to £200 to started to return to sanity pricing.

Premium pricing should only existing for top end card because it is fastest of all, but not for every cards below it as well. I think most people don't give a flying F about the pricing of GTX680 or 7970, if all cards below is are at sub-£280 on launch.
