AMD Card price drop...?

AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series Price Cuts, New Game Bundle Inbound

Capture-15.png

In another quick shift in the hyper-competitive performance video card market, AMD sends word this afternoon that they are enacting some price cuts that will be taking effect later this week. This latest round of price cuts comes hot on the heels of last week’s launch of the GeForce GTX 660 Ti, which saw NVIDIA introduce their first 28nm performance video card at $299.

The bulk of the cuts here will be for the 7800 series, where the 7870 in particular is finding itself somewhat displaced after the launch of the GTX 660 Ti. The $299 660 Ti isn’t necessarily in direct competition with the already-cheaper 7870 – which had a street price of around $279 last week – and since AMD had already quietly shuffled prices around ahead of the GTX 660 Ti launch, we weren’t expecting any further changes here. But it would appear that the gap between the 7870 and GTX 660 Ti is closer than AMD would like.

As a result the 7870 will be getting a slight price cut to push prices towards $249. This would make the card a full $50 cheaper than the GTX 660 Ti, which is apparently the kind of leverage AMD wants right now.

Glad that 7970 prices are not dropping, id hate to think i got a bad deal when i got mine for £299+three free games!!

Sorry your points just aren't following a logical order:

I said that just because somebody said it's OK for nVidia to charge high prices but not AMD doesn't mean it's a valid point.

You then said that it is a valid point because people are paying more for nVidia cards when the performance is close together. (fine)

I take that further and agree that although cards are selling still at the high price point it still isn't OK as it limits choice. You have already concurred with this being "OK" (valid point) so I don't understand your comment above.

If I haven't understood your point then could you perhaps be clearer to help prevent confusion?

The people willing to pay are saying to NV that's its ok, even if they are not happy with what they paid for it that's all, same gos with UK prices.

Hi there

Price drop I have put into place just! :D

All 7850, 7870 and 7950 now at new pricing. :)

Shall make an official post later today.

How much did you pay for your 7970 Dave? IIRC I paid the same for my 680 and being fair, AMD had poo drivers up untill around 12.3 at a guess which did make the 680 stand out as being faster.

Since then, AMD have better drivers and have had a decent price cut which makes for a tempting purchase. The 7950 is a very wise buy with the HIS at £240. We have no idea of how the 680 is selling now but if people were using common sense, they would be snapping up the 670 for a lot less money than a 680.

Whilst I don't wish to get into AMD Vs Nvidia, it was AMD who started this gen of selling at the £440 price point. Nvidia followed suit accordingly. In defence of AMD, they have only copied what Nvidia normally do but for the leap from 580/6970 to 7970/680 isn't justifiable for the price tags they started with.

NEW PRICING

Radeon HD 7850 1GB @ $190 = £120.48
Radeon HD 7850 2GB @ $210 = £133.16
Radeon HD 7870 2GB @ $250 = £158.55
Radeon HD 7970 3GB @ $320 = £202.94

Plus VAT and:

Finally, it should be noted that despite AMD’s official announcement we wouldn’t be all that surprised if only a few cards ended up reaching these new MSRPs. AMD lists their MSRPs as “starting at”, which means that AMD is listing the price of the cheapest card. This is largely how the previous round of price cuts played out, so pickings right at these new MSRPs may be slim.

Yep lovely VAT...

Just need Nvidia to drop prices now, will pick up a GTX 660ti when they are around £180 ;).... Ideal for HTPC, low power use, powerful and small...

Actually I think the 7870 uses slightly less power than a 660ti (depends on which review you want to believe). Im sure that will hit £180 a long time before the 660ti, and the performance is as close to identical as you are likely to see.

Mmm I think it's slightly higher actually*

*in situations where it's actually going to be used

i.e. 1080p, low/none MSAA, FXAA

Still a rubbish card though at its price.

Techpowerup, anandtech and techspot all show it uses more power than the 7870, of course its debatable though.

Irrelevent really as the 7870 should be overvolted and clocked up anyway :p

I need something will a lil more power for HTPC on 1080P 46" Lounge screen.. Using a HD 7770 atm but would be nice to enable higher settings.. Might just go with a GTX 670 and remove the original shroud cooler so it fits nicely in HTPC case... Kuhler mod to keep it nice and cool...

Anyway back on topic, nice to see AMD dropping prices, hopefully Nvidia will follow suit....

Nice job!

That's made it almost impossible to ignore the 7850's now, but a 7950 is a better upgrade from a 5870... Arrgh, tightfisted temptation :D

What brand and model do you have LtMatt if you don't mind me asking?.

I got it because at the time it was on offer of £299+ four free games and it has a three year warranty. Gotta love a three year warranty. At least if i know it breaks anytime within that year ill get a free upgrade or a like for like replacement.

OCUK have the wrong card shown in the pic though. Its this one, which is a reference pcb but its not the same pcb as the stock reference. There are two reference pcb for aib's to use afaik.

Not necessarily, they could very well only offer you a partial refund based on what it would be worth then.
