AMD Catalyst - 'install package failure'

Hello,

I made a thread here yesterday re: finding the correct driver for my Powercolor R9 280 and have since developed new issues which I hope warrants a new thread.

I don't seem to be making any headway installing my driver. I'm getting the 'install package failure' repeatedly. I have looked around a fair bit and it seems to be fairly common. I'm finding it really frustrating which isn't particularly helped by the fact I'm not especially computer literate.

I have attempted to install the 14.7 (beta) version of Catalyst (CCC) at least 5 times today. I've tried 14.4 about 3 times. Following some reading I've tried to 'clean install', i.e. using Display Driver Uninstaller to clear everything AMD (and accidentally the Intel integrated 4600 also), rebooting from safe mode and then attempting an install only to fail. All of these have been with the firewall disabled and no anti-virus software.

I really don't know what to try next. Some of the many suggestions require quite lengthy, potentially complex, solutions which doesn't seem right to me. I'm hoping I'm doing something simple really wrong. I haven't gone as far as a Windows reinstall yet - I've only just put it on my system. I'll give some details:

This is my first build, completed yesterday. The specs are as follows:
Gigabyte GA-Z97M-DS3H
Intel i5 4690K
TeamGroup Vulcan Red 8GB (2x4) 1600 MHz
Powercolor TurboDuo R9 280
Samsung EVO 840 250GB SSD
Super Flower Golden Green 550W PSU (Gold)

I've had no trouble with anything else and found the build process quite easy after much reading. The GPU fans run when the computer is on and it is listing as a generic PCI device in device manager under 'Other devices'. In this drop down there is one other unknown device; 'SM Bus Controller' - I've read and that implies it's something to do with the motherboard but I can't pinpoint what as the Gigabyte website offers quite a few drivers for my motherboard for various functions. Also, I'm running my HDMI through my motherboard as I get no signal from the GPU port.

Any help hugely appreciated.

Owen

I have just realised that my GPU hasn't been sufficiently powered. I had another look around inside to see the 6 pin power socket next to the 8 pin empty on the GPU. Not sure why I overlooked this during the build - I don't think Powercolor provide a manual. I referred to the internet before plugging in the 6 pin power supply (sidenote, I'm using the 6+2 and 6 (with +2 not used) 'SLI-ready' cables. The only PCI ones my PSU has).

Anyway, the interesting (?) thing is when I booted with the 8 and 6 pin power sockets plugged in I was getting no video output from my motherboard or GPU but the computer seemed to be running as normal as far as I could tell without a monitor. Upon removing the 6 pin power supply from my GPU and restarting I have video output from my motherboard once more (but still none from the GPU).

After the build I immediately installed Windows. I know how to enter BIOS, what would disabling the onboard chip achieve?

Well you are trying to install a discrete graphics card into a system that has a graphics chip already installed, your cpu has a graphics chip built in and as far as I know if you want to install a 'separate' graphics card then you must de-activate the onboard first, usually done in the motherboard 'bios'. (see your motherboard manual on how to enter the bios) :)

Thank you for the replies, Roly. I've gone into BIOS and disabled the Intel graphics. Since booting I've now been able to plug my HDMI into my GPU and have it work for the first time. Prior to this I would only get output from my motherboard and nout from the GPU.

In the process of downloading Catalyst again to try and install again.

ok mate good luck. :D
It's installed, Catalyst Control Centre that is. :D I am happy but then it's saying:

'AMD Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using AMD Catalyst Control Centre.'

Sheesh. Any ideas?

If you installed a 'beta' driver then try 14.4 WHQL, just install over the top, see how that goes. :)

Really appreciating your help. I've got 14.4 downloading now.

I've been updating some motherboard drivers and have updated Intel Management Engine Interface and Intel INF installation (can't say I know what they do!) and have attempted to update the VGA driver. The latter won't install as I do no meet the requirements (?).

Also, since doing the the SM Bus Controller is gone from 'Other devices' as is my PCI device - my card? It's not coming up under display adapters either.

14.4 has worked! Rolypoly I cannot thank you enough. 2 days it has taken! If you're ever about North Wales I owe you a pint!

That's great, no problem glad to have helped. :D

Ps. Take my advice and don't mess about too much with graphics drivers, it can cause more bother than its worth, 'If it aint broke' Oh and you don't want to update 'VGA' drivers, that's what 14.4 is. :D

I've had the same issues and its my first ever amd experience, that said to solve it all I did was reformat and install the whql 14.4 seems to be a breeze now :)

Ote1 nice to see you up and running. building a pc isn't as hard as people think. Software building site can be tricky but again not as scary as people think :)

Edit: Going to make a new thread for this seeing as it's a different topic.

Cheers guys. Managed to get on an play some high-detail Civ V this evening after work (safe to say at 1am this morning I didn't quite feel like booting it up!) and it's awesome.

Have a slight concern though. The GPU, and I think I can isolate it to the GPU by location and stopping other fans in the case, seems to make a funny buzzing/vibrating noise. It's quite discreet and you have to listen for it at idle. It's constantly on off as though it's some kind of beat.

Under load however is becomes quite a bit more audible. It's not smooth sounding which is what concerns me most. I'm used to GPU fans having a good 'whoosh' noise (previous to this I had a rock laptop, Clevo thing, with a seriously shouty 9800M GT). Unfortunately, because it's not smooth or consistent I'm finding the noise quite irritating and to my untrained ear it doesn't quite sound right.

I'll try and get a recording in a moment whilst booting up Civ to post on Youtube. When it comes to the actual playing screen (I'd guess where the GPU really has to start working to make the water look oh-so-good) the temps hike a little and the buzzing noise gets louder. Never exceeds 62'C.

Stick your finger in the middle of the fan to stop it spinning to see if the noise stops. If so then sounds like the fan bearings are buggered. If not, something may be loose. Have you attached the PCI bracket from the graphics card to the case?

Failing that it may be a capacitor buzzing... it should clear in time but you may want to consider sending the card back in your DSR period if you're not happy with it as there's no real guarantee it'll clear.
