Apparently Rage can run like a hot steaming pile of **** with extremely slow texture pop ups, artefacts(please take note masterdeadly
), and screen tearing.
Amd has posted a new driver to help out:

AMD Catalyst Rage Performance Driver Features:
Significant performance gains for single GPU configurations
Compatible with AMD Radeon™ 6000 and AMD Radeon 5000 series of graphics products
Includes the latest OpenGL driver component for Rage performance optimizations
Looks like no CrossFire for AMD users either.

As SLI is broken too, you may want to disable SLI to run this game or make a profile with SLI disabled until Nvidia/ID supply a fix.

Went to my control panel (nvidia) custom set AA & AF along with forceing vsync + tripple buffering. Game looks a lot better and LOD issue is gone.
My Rig is nothing special ; vista 64/2 gtx 260 SLI/12 gigs ram/corei7 not overclocked. Driver: 285.27
