AMD claims it will power another gaming device

AMD gained a large market for its Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) products when both Microsoft and Sony decided to incorporate APUs into current-generation gaming consoles. The Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 both feature AMD semi-custom APUs on which AMD makes around $100 per APU sold, according to IHS iSuppli.

Comments made by AMD's Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Devinder Kumar, suggest AMD will be making its way into another major gaming device, other reports suggest. The gaming device in question, and the brand that will be producing it, were not named, but the new deal could prove equally lucrative for AMD.

Kumar also commented that "one [design win] is x86 and [another] is ARM, and at least one will [be] beyond gaming, right...But that is about as much as you going to get out me today. From the standpoint [of being] fair to [customers], it is their product, and they launch it. They are going to announce it and then […] you will find out that it is AMD’s APU that is being used in those products."

A few in the comments mentioning it could be a new 3DS.... there is already a new 3DS lol...

Not sure if it will be a new vita either, the vita was hardly a great success.

I'm not too excited about this if it is a normal living room console, it won't be too different from the current ones performance wise if it uses a similar APU. If it was a handheld on the other hand then I'd be very interested!

The ARM one I'm 98% sure is a pretty large server contract, Seattle chip based, micro server quite possibly for Facebook but we'll see.

x86 and gaming you would think limits it to Nintendo, MS, Sony, Valve and Apple. No one else does anything with AMD, x86 or both. I could see Valve going semi custom and having used a little time to get SteamOS working but seeing next to no interest in steam boxes as they are, wanting a cheaper standardised SteamBox in more console format.

It could be one of the much rumoured lite versions of a Xbox One/PS4 though I doubt that myself, more like a tv box with light gaming, so something like an Xbox Half, literally, a quad core + half sized gpu for £150 or something. I don't think it would do well at all but MS are stupid.

I'd say Apple trying to get into consoles and expanding upwards from their TV boxes and going AMD/x86 to be compatible with the gaming industry as it is now then buying their way into exclusives and customers wouldn't be a problem for them.

I'd say Nintendo with a next gen Wii for 2016, Valve with a real steambox or Apple are most likely.

There is an outside chance if it was to be in production late 2015 for a mid 2016 release that you could be looking at something based on the new architecture. For a 2016 release on the CPU side architecture wise Zen needs to be closing in on being finished now after work in the past 2-3 years.

AMD getting where they need to be.

This is good, it means more revenue to play with for desktop and server parts :D

Depends on when this is to be ready for, if for example in two years time I'd guess the 3DS successor. Its the best fit if Nintendo want to go all AMD and keep things simple on handheld and home console when they seem to want to move towards.

You serious ? This is a huge product in Japan (psp) like millions and millions sold i think 50% of sales are in Japan alone. way more psp sold than PS4 sales its massively popular in Japan. But in the UK it is a flop. Personally i cant stand the thing.

Edit: just checked wiki 80million sales of psp (same as ps3) vs 14million ps4 systems so far

Thats for PSP's. The Vita has sold less then the PS4 with 9.15m sales compared to the PS4's 14million.

I don't it will be a new handheld PS either, Vita was not as popular as the PSP. I believe Japan still produces games for the older PSP instead of the Vita as well...

If anything, it could be this: http://www.techradar.com/news/gamin...-on-a-cheap-new-console-for-next-year-1247576

Nintendo seems to be planning a much cheaper console for 2015 for emerging markets, previous Nintendo consoles did use AMD graphics so would make sense for this cheap console to use an AMD APU.

Fair enough tbh i dont have any idea of the difference between the psp or vita. Tbh going off sony stuff big time, i have a ps4 and tbh my ps3 is a better machine. Does so much more. My ps4 cant even stream media over dlna (face palm) games are naff and well it just does not impress me. Hence why i recently get back i to my pc gaming as the 4 was a let down imo

Great news, more money pumping back into AMD, keep the cashflow rolling while we live in hope of something to counter Intel in the desktop CPU market.

I'm sure Nintendo mentioned they would be releasing something specific for the Chinese markets . Maybe this ?

This.

Although X86 + Radeon seems a bit high-overhead for Chinese market? What I assume they mean is selling to farmers and non-rich people a device with a very low BOM.

what else is cheaper for less ? I'm sure the wii u costs more in terms of GPU/CPU as its from different suppliers/manufacturers... Getting the APU from AMD could bring down the cost Drammaticly enabling market penetration in all sectors
