Hi
I currently run an Intel prescot 3.2g (478) at 3.5g, X800 pro graphics (agp), 1gig geil 3200/2.5 (pair 512k) on an Asus P4c800e dlx. Hiper 525w psu. I have a buyer for my graphics card, & hope to Ebay the M/B & CPU, retaining memory for new rig. With a budget of 500-650 can you guys point me in the right direction of motherboard (prefer Asus), CPU & Graphics (nvidia or ati??). Main use is games, some photo & video editing, also used as a server on my home network, for mp3 & avi files. Obviously I'm looking for a visible performance increase.
sorry this rambles on...

cheers

This is way under your budget, so, if you wanted to try dual core CPU you could go for the 3800+ X2. Maybe bump the 7800GT up to a GTX. You'll also need an ATX 2.0 PSU, I'd suggest the Hiper 580W modular.

Welcome to the forums, this could be suitable, you have 2gb Ram a good graphics card which beats the 7800gt, an Asus motherboard and a decent CPU which ought to also overclock quite well. You could still fit an X2 CPU into the budget if you choose or possibly even up the graphics card to an X1800XT which shows a clean pair of heels to pretty much anything in the price range.

compatable??

Hi
Thanks for the input, if I push to the limits of my budget I could go as follows:-

Asus A8N-sli Premium (MB-111-AS) need the spdif output. @ £104.95
His Excalibur X1800XL (GX-042-HT) @ £189.95
Opteron 165 (CP-151_AM) @ £229.95
+vat £ 91.84
total £616.69

Do you think I would have any compatability issues with the Opteron & motherboard ie. does the bios even support it, or should I stick with a 4400+ dual core?
thanks again
regards
Patrick

The Opteron 165 is a damn good processor & you have a good mobo to match.
With the X1800XL, you should have a great rig. Shouldnt expext any problems. Enjoy.
