AMD Cool n Quiet not working

Hi, I built a HTPC about 2 months ago and Cool 'n' Quiet was working when I first built it.
I was just looking at cpu-z and noticed Cool 'n' Quiet isn't working anymore. The only thing I have changed since is the HSF fan from stock to a Zalman CNPS7500-ALCU.

I've tried resetting the bios to default and reinstalling the chipset drivers but it's still not working.
My cpu is a AMD phenom 9550 Quad. Rest of the spec is in my sig.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Yes, the Zalman only has 3 pins.
Don't understand why the fan makes a difference, it only needs to reduce the voltage and cpu multiplier.

Thanks

Have you set Windows Power Savings to Minimal ?

That's how it used to work on the Socket 939 chips anyway. . . .

Cheers, thats sorted it. I had it set on high performance. :D

I've never really looked into the cool 'n quite feature. I'm on socket.939. Is it worth enabling?

No reason not to enable it. When the cpu is idle (using internet, music etc.) it lowers the cpu speed and voltage to save power and lower temps. The second the cpu starts to do anything it will put it back to full speed.

CnQ works perfectly at default clocks but when overclocking there can be problems. The CPU multiplier is lowered to reduce the CPU speed when CnQ is enabled but it affects the translated memory speed which depending on your overclocked settings can cause the memory to be overclocked too far resulting in a crash.

I have a socket 939 iDEQ cube system with a X2 3800+ running at stock speed with CnQ enabled. It's often downclocked to 1GHz and the system runs a lot cooler.

turn it off and overclock as much as possible!!!

jk

have you tried the latest bios - its a long shot but may be worth it

Sorry to jump in too but - my old setup has an A64 3200+ (not OC'd) with DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D mobo, can I and should I enable Cool'n'Quiet too?

You can use cool n quiet, whether you should really depends on if you want the CPU to run at max clocks all the time, or if you want it to drop the clock speeds/voltage whilst it's not doing much.
I'd personally just leave it if you're happy, on a single core 3200+ I wouldn't think the savings on power would be that great and it shouldn't be running too hot anyway.

Ah ok, will probably leave it then. I was just planning to pass the system on to a relative who'd only be doing mainly office work, so I hope to set it up as stable and quiet and not have to worry about it anymore :)
