AMD Cooler Thermal Compound

Just bought a 3500+, and the heatsink supplied has a layer of silvery substance on the bottom: is this pre-applied thermal compound, or just trying to help connectivity?

It is thermal compound. You don't need to bother applying your own as it is quite reasonable

AFAIK the stuff supplied on the AMD coolers these days is almost if not as good as what you can buy.
