Hi Guys

My Current board is a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 (rev 2.0)

From what I understand I can fit any AM3 processor in the slot but I will loose the HT from HT 3.0 to HT 1.0(I have no idea what this is)

I have this list here http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Gigabyte/GA-M57SLI-S4(rev._2.0).html Is it worth me looking at the Phenoms or shall I go down the Athlon II X4 630/635 Route?

I have DDR2 RAM in my PC so I won’t loose anything there as I understand AM3 Processors have DDR2 & DDR3 controllers.

Well the X4 635 would be a good cheap upgrade for you.

If you can find a Phenom II 720/940/945 for cheap those would be a good choice also.

Hi guys

Quite likely to go for the Athlon II X4 635 its £90 from a competitor

However it does state on the Gigabyte site that if I put a AM3 chip in my AM2 socket it will lower the HT from H3 to H1 (5000 kb/s to 2000kb/s)

As I’m going from a Dual Core to Quad Core what implications are we talking about? I mean am I going to see a failure in the Processor or is this likely to be barely noticeable? I don’t play many games mainly WoW but I get 20FPS with my GTX260 in 25 Man Raids and I have been told WoW is CPU heavy more than GFX (hence the upgrade)

Thanks guys

Why would you pay £90 from a competitor, when it is £80.99 here...

There won't be any failure from using HT 1.0.

You will only really find yourself with a bottleneck if you use a quad core AM3 and max all cores to 100% in a very memory intensive task.

Other than that it'll work fine.

£81 – Sorry Im posting this on a Friends behalf as he’s not a member (and apparently a nab cake)

He said he will get it from here in that case :o)

He said TY all for your help and when he gets home he’ll sort his access out

what games he play a phenomII 945 is better in games than a athlonII 635 because of the 6mb cache but if you can find one cheap enough.

Phenom II X4 945

Got one myself and couldn't be happier with it. I'm not an enthusiast overclocker but i've managed 3.40Ghz on air (stock is 3.0Ghz).
